PREFACE.

To define with precifion the various duties of life, to mark the boundaries between vice and virtue, and to fhew with accuracy, in all its extent, the true road to happiness, is the moft dignified, yet the most difficult employment, which can engage the attention of any human being; but, confidering the fallibility of our judgment and the narrowness of our intellects, it is too great a work for any individual, and requires the efforts of various talents. The great purpose of the prefent undertaking is to leffen the effect of prejudice, and diffufe the comforts of fociety. I do not pretend to give the world full and complete information on any fubject; mine are not finished thoughts, but MaTERIALS for THINKING, which may tend to excite the attention aud call forth the exertions
