and more anxious for the salvation of all mankind. We learn to be temperate in our enjoyments, to bear prosperity with moderation, and adversity with calmness; and thus we promote the glory of God, by showing that religion has power to subdue every passion, and soothe every sorrow, that "her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace."

The Prayer.

ALMIGHTY and Eternal God! the King of kings, and Lord of lords! Thou only art holy, and to Thee alone belong salvation, and glory, and honour, and power. I praise and magnify thy name for all the numberless benefits Thou hast bestowed upon me during the whole course of my life; for my health, reason, friends, and all the comforts I enjoy, but especially for the consolations of religion. How can thy creatures return sufficient thanks to thee, O Lord, for thine abundant mercy in sending thy Son Jesus Christ into the world to redeem us from iniquity, to declare to us plainly the terms of thy forgiveness and favour, to instruct us in true religion, and to reveal to us the certainty of a future life!-I would beseech Thee to grant that I may not render myself unworthy of these inestimable blessings, but that the example and precepts of our blessed Saviour may so influence every thought and action, that I may subdue every evil disposition, and fulfil every duty of

the station in which Thou hast placed me. In every circumstance of my life, whether of pleasure or of sorrow, let religion be my guide and my support; make me fully sensible of the blessing of being continually under thy never-failing protection; and raise my mind above the vanities of this present world, that it may be fixed upon Thee, the supreme, the infinite Good, who alone can satisfy the immortal desires of our souls, and in whom alone we can be completely and eternally happy. Bless thy universal Church; let the ministers of the gospel adorn their doctrine by their example, in charity, in faith, in purity; and grant that all who call themselves Christians may be animated by a pure and fervent zeal for the honour of religion and the glory of Thy name. Especially I pray for myself, and all who hope to receive this day the Communion of the body and blood of Christ, that we may be found so acceptable in thy sight as to receive from thy mercy all the benefits of that sacred institution; that our sins may be forgiven, our faith confirmed, our charity enlarged; and that, being blessed and sanctified by thy Holy Spirit, we may constantly go on still towards perfection, as the children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ, till we become meet for the inheritance of the saints in light, through his merits who died and rose again for us, and who now sits at the right hand of God, our blessed Saviour and Redeemer! RAISE thou the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me praise his holy name!

Praise thou the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits; who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who redeemeth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercy! As for man, his days are as grass, as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth: but the mercy of the Lord

is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him; and his righteousness unto children's children, to such as keep his covenant, and remember his commandments to do them. Behold, God is my salvation: I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he is become my salvation!

Christ himself, by the oblation of himself, once offered, has made a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world, and has commanded us to keep a perpetual memorial thereof in his holy sacrament, whereby we declare our belief in his word, our hope in his mercy, and our trust in his atonement for us; and by the Communion of his body and blood we receive a confirmation of our faith, and are assured of the favour and goodness of God towards us in the pardon of all our sins, and are admitted members of his mystical body, and heirs, through hope, of that everlasting kingdom which he has purchased with his own blood.
