FORECASTS FOR FARMERS.

Changes on the 5th and the 27th, but it is not certain that these are to produce rains; the rainy signs during this month being from the 15th to the 19th, within which time there will, I believe, be a great deal distributed about with thunder storms.

Timely Marnings and Wholesome Precepts.

I still continue to perceive signs of tranquillity in the West, and of hostilities in the East. I should imagine-for I determine with much diffidence the meaning of the portentous signs that refer to the Western world-I should imagine, however, that complete emancipation must have succeeded in South America, and that they are now busy in forming their national divisions of the country. But the affairs of North America may be included in the omen of which I am speaking; yet, as it indicates change of government and a new order of policy, I conceive cannot refer to the United States. By the signs of these times which point to the East, I hope I am able to perceive that Mohammed's doctrines are yielding to Christianity. A most grievous train of massacres, such as no days since those of Domitian's persecutions has witnessed, or since the cruelties practised under Antiochus the Illustrious, (as he was called,) on the poor Jews, is manifested; and I believe the Arab Mohammedans will be the chief perpetrators. It will not, however, be successful in its objects against true religion; and I hope the delusions are fast dissipating that have kept the minds of 200,000,000 of human beings in a state of darkness so many years; and that the Ottoman Sultan will be taught to know that the titles of "God on Earth"-"The Shadow of God"-and such like, are the height of blasphemy and presumption. The meeting of Jupiter and Venus, in the House of Gain, at the close of last month, is a propitious omen to those who may have mercantile or other speculations of magnitude, floating at that time. The posture, too, of Jupiter and Mars, on the 13th, is a hopeful token; for the Moon (whose relation to every aspect of the other orbs is a prime consideration) is, at the time, coming to a conjunction with Jupiter: I have, therefore, good reason to augur, that reconciliation is about to be wrought; and more especially, as I find the signs of the ensuing months confirming anticipations of a nature rather harmonious.

(Continued.)

The spirit of dominion next made Rome
Its tabernacle-viz.-its earthly home-
A creature terrible, and strong, with horns:
A desolating beast as Daniel warns!
I must not here, however, stay, to tell
How the fourth empire rose-but that it fell
Whelm'd in the wickedness, I needs must say,
Of those that o'er it held imperial sway.-
Thus have we seen that states the mightiest, all
Thro' sceptred sin, and self-presumption, fall! |

And if we further look at Israel's fate,
And Judah's, we shall find the GOOD were GREAT!
That wicked rulers uniformly brought
To misery first, and in the end, to nought
Their victim countries!-Thus bas Time un-
furl'd

A lesson of importance to the world;
Which none can gainsay-none can cavil down-
Which valid shall endure, until Earth's latest

crown!

FORECASTS FOR FARMERS.

There will, I think, be no small quantity of wet in the month of August. According to my rule of judging, there will be rain on the 3rd and 4th, and a succession of rain from the 10th to the 14th; and I may venture to say, that the 17th and 18th will be wet days, after which probably fine to the end. I expect the rains on the 12th and 13th to be accompanied with stormy and tempestuous weather; and, having mentioned the particular days on which the signs of rain are most conspicuous, I leave the husbandman to forecast his harvest-work accordingly.

Timely Warnings and Wholesome Precepts.

It is most particularly in this and the ensuing month that the favourable configurations are taking place. There are, it will be seen, no less than five quartile positions recorded in the above register of notable aspects. I wish much that it were in my power to pronounce them efficient tokens of good to our country. There is, however, an extensive benevolence at this time exercising throughout the kingdom on the part of a great portion of our nobility, by which much of the national calamity seems to be mitigated. I do not perceive that either of the eclipses this month are the forerunners of mischief to Great Britain: but if I were inclined to indulge in individual applications of these omens, I could say that the import of one of them seems fatal to one of very high rank on the continent: and, from the baneful seat of Mercury on the 18th, I presage, with concern, the loss of some philosopher, or mathematician, or genius of the highest order, in this, or some country bordering on our meridian. My design being to furnish such forewarnings as relate to public bodies, I hope, in pursuing this, that I shall never suffer servility of any sort to control my conscience in either disguising or withholding the truth: for whatever human edicts may decree, I trust that, as long as I retain my intellect, I shall never be persuaded that honest truth and reason are repugnant to the laws of God. The moral codes of different states are such, That moral sins in nature differ much; [strange,) Nay, sins themselves, ('tis no less true than To fit with state affairs, their natures change, From that allied to virtue, in a trice, To black or scarlet-any shade of vice!— For instance, 'twas awhile ago prophane, In one yclept John Bull, to seek t'obtain

FORECASTS FOR FARMERS.

Upon the whole the month of September will, I think, be favourable to harvest work, though from the 3rd to the 8th there will be partial thunder showers and a great deal of wet fall: the rain which I apprehend likely to prove of most consequence afterwards will fall on the 16th. During the remainder of the month the signs of fine weather prevail, and I don't think the equinoctial gales will be violent.

Timely Warnings and holesome Precepts.

According to our English mode of chronologising, the Autumnal Quarter begins when the Sun enters Libra, that is, on the 23rd of September, at 12 min. past three o'clock in the afterhoon. By the horoscope constructed for that moment, according to Ptolemy, 14 degrees of Capricorn ascend in the East, and 18 degrees of Scorpio are at the culminating point, called Medium Coeli. The Moon and Georgium Sidus are in the Ascendant, in trine with Venus, with Saturn, and with the Sun, who, with Mercury, Venus, and Vesta, is posited in the house of Religion. Mars is in the high heaven or kingdom, and opposing Saturn in the house of Good Fortune, whilst Jupiter in that of Evil Fortune stands quartile to Venus in her seat of Piety. The trine of Venus and Saturn, and the quartile of Jupiter and the Sun, with the trine of Saturn and Pallas, are the remaining aspects of this quarter most worthy of notice, as relative to subjects of a general nature, the application of which to coming events will be found detailed in the compendium of Warnings and Precepts for the following month. But there are portentous omens of a baleful kind, that I am fearful will be followed by some signal strokes of fate; particularly that of Venus in the Tail of the Dragon: and though I might pretty confidently make my election of a subject to whom its threatening is directed, yet it would be imprudent to divulge my apprehensions: I therefore wait the consequences with deep anxiety. The lethargy into which all Christendom has suffered itself to be lulled, cannot, I know, be easily acted upon: but, by persevering to attack prejudice and contumacy with bare-faced fulfilments of celestial tokens, I hope to do much good:

Prone to indulge a worldly will, mankind
Reel giddy forward, to the future blind!-
Yes-day and night-and night and day, tis
Continue yet each other to ensue; [true
But Nature cannot permanently reign;
Nor can the might of man her course sustain
For one short moment-nay, her final doom
The twinkling of an eye may fix ;-and gloom,
Still, sterilescent, Stygian, overwhelm
Her sprightly, splendid, spacious-spreading

realm!

Since things are so and so indeed they are,
Zion, and every Syrian hill declare

In echoes of that heaven-inspired horn,
Sounded by chosen prophets to forewarn
A listless race-since Earth shall melt
away!'

Since Sun, and Moon, and Stars must brook
decay-

Since Nature's brittle frame, a sudden clash
May, into atoms-into nothing, dash-
Will poor infatuated man presume
To brave the fury of the threaten'd doom?
His few, his precious days in riot spend,
As though this world were his, and not to

end?
