rock gushed forth at His command full-flowing rivers; manna dropped like the rain at His word, GOD's heavenly bread was food unto all.

Like as a flock He hath gently led His people by Moses' and Aaron's hand.

THE CAPTIVITY IN BABYLON.

But then His flock forsook the commandments of GOD, they scorned the Holy One of Israel, forgat the wonders and the works He had wrought.

GOD the Omnipotent cries unto the earth; from morning until evening He is calling, if we perchance may hearken.

Wasting fire before Him is going, mighty thunder and tempest. GOD the LORD judgeth His people.

As chaff will I scatter them that forsake Me, yea, like as chaff to the winds of the desert.

Hearken! I bid My servant smite them, the King out of Babylon; with the breath of My anger I desolate the land!

So He made them to fall by the heathen, and their mighty foemen bowed them down.

THE RETURN.

Yet merciful and tender is the LORD, forgiving, and full of goodness; His anger doth not ever burn; He pardons sin, and forgets wickedness, and puts far away displeasure. He doth lead gently His flock Israel, and bring them to their native land.

Merciful and tender is the LORD, forgiving, and full of goodness.

There shall come a Redeemer, a Saviour, to Zion, for the sons of Jacob, if, turning and repenting, they will seek from the LORD mercy.

Bethlehem Ephratah, Thou art not the least of the towns of Judah, for out of thee shall rise a Ruler of Israel; and His reign is everlasting; from eternity are His goings forth!

Arise and shine, O Zion! Thy light comes, and the glory of the LORD surrounds thee.

Lift up thy head, and behold how they gather themselves together; from all countries come thy sons assembling, and at thy side thy daughters shall be nursed and be sheltered; the cedars of Lebanon come unto thee to adorn thy sacred temple.

Thou shalt call thy sheltering walls Salvation; of thy gates shall the name be Praise to GOD!

Never shall thy sun be setting, and never thy moon withdraw herself, for the LORD is thy Light everlasting. GADE.

All ye

who weep, O come unto Me,
I will comfort you.

All ye who suffer, O come to Me,
I will console you.

All ye who mourn, O come to Me,
I am your peace.

All ye who die, O come to Me
For life eternal.

BY BABYLON'S WAVE.

PSALM CXXXVII. (Paraphrase).

Here by Babylon's wave

Though heathen hands have bound us,

Though afar from our land,

The pains of death surround us;

Sion! thy memory still

In our heart we are keeping,

And still we turn to thee,

Our eyes all sad with weeping.

Through our harps that we hung on the trees,

Goes the low wind wearily moaning:

Mingles the sad note of the breeze,

With voice as sad of sigh and groaning.

When mad with wine our foe rejoices,
When unto their altars they throng,
Loud for mirth then they call-" A song!
A song of Sion sing, lift up your voices!"
O LORD, though the victor command
Our captivity sad and lowly,

How shall we raise Thy song so holy,
That we sung in our father's land?
Jerusalem, if we forget thee,

Let our hands remember not their power,
And our tongues be silent from that hour,
Jerusalem, if we forget thee.

Woe unto thee, Babylon, mighty city,
For the day of thy fall is nigh!
For thee no hope, for thee no pity,
Though loud thy wail riseth on high!
Then shalt thou, desolate, forsaken,

Be torn from thy fanes and thy thrones;
In that day shall thy babes be taken

And dashed against the stones.
Then unto thee, O Babylon the mighty,
Be woe! Be woe! Be woe!

GOUNOD.

Come unto Him, all ye who labour,
Your LORD will give you rest and peace,
Comfort for all your sorrows: ye weary,
He will give you rest for your souls.
O turn from the pleasures of sin,
And behold your LORD on His Cross,
Who dies for the sins of the world.
He will receive you, He will refresh you,
He will give rest to your souls.

Behold, on His Cross our Redeemer,
Nailed there by our transgressions,
Calls all men to Himself;

He pleads His Blood,

He shews His streaming wounds,

As He makes intercession; He cries,
"Come ye to Me, and I will save your

soul!" GOUNOD.

"BETHLEHEM."

Cradled all lowly behold the Saviour Child,
A Being Holy, in dwelling rude and wild.
Ne'er yet was regal state

Of monarch proud and great,

Who grasped a nation's fate,

So glorious as the manger-bed of Bethlehem.

No longer sorrow as without hope, oh earth!
A brighter morrow dawned with that Infant's birth.
Our sins were great and sore,
But these the Saviour bore,
And GOD was wrath no more:

His own Son was the Child that lay in Bethlehem.

Babe weak and wailing, in lowly village stall
Thy glory veiling, Thou cam'st to die for all.
The sacrifice is done, The world's atonement won,
Till time its course hath run.

O JESU, Saviour, Morning Star of Bethlehem !
Hallelujah. Amen.

GOUNOD.

Hail, gladdening Light, of His pure glory poured,
Who is the Immortal Father, Heavenly, Blest,

Holiest of Holies, JESU CHRIST, our LORD.

Now we are come to the sun's hour of rest,
The lights of evening round us shine,

We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Divine.

Worthiest art Thou at all times to be sung
With undefiled tongue,

Son of our GOD, Giver of life, alone :

Therefore in all the world Thy glories, LORD, they own. Amen.
