XVIII.

BEHOLD, the LORD's hand is not shortened,

that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

[Isaiah lix. 1-4.]

BEHOLD, ye trust in lying words, that

cannot profit.

Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say,

We are delivered to do all these abominations?

Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

[Jeremiah vii. 8-11.]

[Proverbs x. 25.]

E are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be

ashamed:

Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of

heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen for the Lord GOD shall

slay thee, and call his servants by another

name:

That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth.

[Isaiah lxvi. 11-16.]

E that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

II.

H sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole

head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

[Isaiah i. 4-6.]

III.

'HIS the people saw, and understood it not, neither laid they up this in their minds, That his grace and mercy is with

his saints, and that he hath respect unto his chosen. Thus the righteous that is dead shall condemn the ungodly which are living; and youth that is soon perfected the many years and old age of the unrighteous. For they shall see the end of the wise, and shall not understand what God in his counsel hath decreed of him, and to what end the Lord hath set him in safety.

They shall see him, and despise him; but God shall laugh them to scorn: and they shall hereafter be a vile carcase, and a reproach among the dead for

evermore.

And when they cast up the accounts of their sins, they shall come with fear: and their own iniquities shall convince them to their face.

IV.

[Wisdom iv. 15-18, 20.]

BEHOLD, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.

His mischief shall return upon his own head. [Psalm vii. 14-16.]

v.

LIVE not thy soul unto a woman to set her foot upon thy substance.

Meet not with an harlot, lest thou fall into

her snares.

VI.

[Ecclus. ix. 2, 3.]

THY way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.

VII.

[Jeremiah iv. 18.]

THE fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

VIII.

[Psalm xiv. 1.]

HELP, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the

children of men.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

[Psalm xii. 1, 2.]

HEY bend their tongues like their bow
for lies but they are not valiant for the
truth upon the earth; for they proceed
from evil to evil, and they know not me,
saith the LORD.
[Jeremiah ix. 3.]
