III.

E hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

IV.

[Micah vi. 8.]

ND ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

[blocks in formation]

ΤΗ

HOU, O God, art gracious and true, longsuffering, and in mercy ordering all things.

For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine.

For to know thee is perfect righteousness: yea, to know thy power is the root of immortality.

VI.

[Wisdom xv. 1—3.]

THE way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

HE

VII.

[Proverbs xvi. 24.]

E that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.

[Proverbs xxi. 21.]

VIII.

THE fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. [Proverbs xiv. 27.]

IX.

HEARKEN unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it

not.

Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

X.

[Proverbs viii. 32-36.]

'HY words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand for thou hast filled me with indignation.

XI.

[Jeremiah xv. 16, 17.]

BY mercy and truth iniquity is purged : and by the fear of the LORD men depart

from evil.

[Proverbs xvi. 6.]

XII.

HONOURABLE age is not that which standeth in length of time, nor that is measured by number of years.

But wisdom is the grey hair unto man, and an unspotted life is old age.

He pleased God, and was beloved of him: so that living among sinners he was translated.

Yea, speedily was he taken away, lest that wickedness should alter his understanding, or deceit beguile his soul.

For the bewitching of naughtiness doth obscure things that are honest; and the wandering of concupiscence doth undermine the simple mind.

He, being made perfect in a short time, fulfilled a long time:

For his soul pleased the Lord: therefore hasted he to take him away from among the wicked.

XIII.

[Wisdom iv. 8-14.]

ONE thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

[Psalm xxvii. 4, 5.]

XIV.

EEK the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.

Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth.

Seek him, that maketh the seven stars and

Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.

THE

[Amos v. 6-8.]

God's Omnipotence.

I.

HE LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that

have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Jeremiah x. 10-12.

II.

SING unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the LORD:

To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.

Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.

O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.

III.

[Psalm lxviii. 32-35.]

OF old hast thou laid the foundation of the

earth and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee. [Psalm cii. 25-28.]

IV.

THE Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me [Job. iii. 4.]

life.
