Freer and Andrew take the view that is is more valuable to present a substantial selection from the most important poets. Each poet's work is preceded by a short biographical note with suggestions for further reading. For many readers modern poetry is still difficult. Notes are therefore provided to stimulate a response and to inform the reader of matters of fact. The poets represented are Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, W. B.
