R. V.

And upon the harp will I praise thee, O God, my God.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul?

And why art thou disquieted within me?

Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him,

Who is the a health of my countenance, and my God.

PSALM XLIV.

For the Chief Musician; a Psalm of the sons of Korah. Maschil. 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us,

What work thou didst in their days, in the days of old. 2 Thou didst drive out the nations with thy hand, and plantedst them in;

Thou didst afflict the peoples, and didst spread them abroad.

3 For they gat not the land in possession by their own sword,

Neither did their own arm save them:

But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance,

Because thou hadst a favour unto them.

4 Thou art my King, O God: Command deliverance for

Jacob.

5 Through thee will we push down our adversaries :

Through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow,

Neither shall my sword

save me.

7 But thou hast saved us from our adversaries,

And hast put them to shame that hate us.

8 In God have we made our boast all the day long,

And we will give thanks unto thy name for ever. [Selah

XLIV. 2. b Or, cast them forth.

4. Or, victories.

14 Thou makest us to be rebuked of our neighbours :

To be laughed to scorn, and had in derision of them that are round about us.

15 Thou makest us to be a by-word among the heathen:

And that the people shake their heads at us.

16 My confusion is daily before me :

And the shame of my face hath covered me;

17 For the voice of the slanderer and blasphemer :

For the enemy and avenger. 18 And though all this be come upon us, yet do we not forget thee:

Nor behave ourselves frowardly in thy covenant.

19 Our heart is not turned back :

Neither our steps gone out of thy way;

20 No, not when thou hast smitten us into the place of dragons:

And covered us with the shadow of death.

21 If we have forgotten the Name of our God,

And holden up our hands to any strange god :

out?

Shall not God search it

For he knoweth the very secrets of the heart.

A. V.

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame;

And goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy:

And they which hate us spoil for themselves.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat;

And hast scattered us among the heathen. 12 Thou sellest thy people b for nought,

And dost not increase thy wealth by their price. 13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours,

A scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen,

A shaking of the head among the people. 15 My confusion is continually before me,

And the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; By reason of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee,

Neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. 18 Our heart is not turned back,

Neither have our steps declined from thy way; 19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons,

And covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God,

Or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out?

For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

R. V.

9 But now thou hast cast us off, and brought us to dishonour;

And goest not forth with our hosts.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary:

And they which hate us spoil for themselves. 11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat;

And hast scattered us among the nations. 12 Thou sellest thy people for nought,

And hast not increased thy wealth by their price. 13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours,

A scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the nations,

A shaking of the head among the peoples. 15 All the day long is my dishonour before me,

And the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; By reason of the enemy and the avenger.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee,

Neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. 18 Our heart is not turned back,

Neither have our steps declined from thy way; 19 That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals,

And covered us with the shadow of death. 20 If we have forgotten the name of our God,

Or spread forth our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out?

For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

7 Thy seat, O God, endureth for ever:

The sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

8 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity :

Wherefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee

With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

9 All thy garments smell of myrrh, aloes, and cassia :

Out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

10 Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women:

Upon thy right hand did stand the queen in a vesture of gold, wrought about with divers colours.

11 Hearken, O daughter, and consider, incline thine ear :

Forget also thine own people, and thy father's house. 12 So shall the King have pleasure in thy beauty:

For he is thy Lord God, and worship thou him. 13 And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift:

Like as the rich also among the people shall make their supplication before thee. 14 The King's daughter is all glorious within :

gold.

Her clothing is of wrought

15 She shall be brought unto the King in raiment of needlework :

The virgins that be her fellows shall bear her company,

And shall be brought unto

thee. 16 With joy and gladness shall they be brought :

And shall enter into the King's palace.

17 Instead of thy fathers thou shalt have children : Whom thou mayest make

princes in all lands.

A. V. XLV. 7. a Or, O God.

6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:

The sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

8 All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia,

Out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

A sceptre of equity is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 7 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness:

Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee

With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made thee glad.

18 I will remember thy Name from one generation to another :

Therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee, world without end.

PSALM XLVI.

Deus noster refugium.

1 God is our hope and strength :

A very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved :

And though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell :

And though the mountains shake at the tempest of the

same.

4 The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God:

The holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest. 5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed :

God shall help her, and that right early.

6 The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved :

But God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us :

The God of Jacob is our refuge.

8 O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord :

What destruction he hath brought upon the earth.

9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world :

He breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder, And burneth the chariots in the fire.

17 I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations:

Therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.

1 God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God,

The holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:
