they were collected with reference to Mr. Paine as a public character and a political writer, and not as a theologian. In the Departments of General Literature the Library is tolerably strong. Fine copies of some of Dibdin's Works, Chalmers' British Essayists, Nicholl's Anecdotes, 19 vols., Cuvier's Animal Kingdom, on large paper. Voyages and Travels in general form an important section. A most beautiful series of the Quarto Voyages, all bound uniformly in russia, is deserving of mention—the set of "Cook" especially so. The series of books published as "The United States Exploring Expedition" is extensive, and in the condition described, quite scarce. The Fine Arts are well represented in a beautiful copy of Dunlap's Arts of Design, extensively illustrated; the various Works of Ruskin, the Orleans, Stafford and other Galleries, Musée Français, Neale's Views, and other practical and theoretical Works. Poetry and the Drama includes a fine set of Pickering's Aldine Poets' uncut; Chalmers' Poets, 21 vols. 8vo, calf; Johnson's Poets, 85 vols.; Shakspeare and Shakspeariana, and the principal authors of eminence. Fiction is represented in complete sets of Sir Walter Scott's Works, 100 vols., Dickens, Edgeworth, Swift, Smollett, Fielding, &c. The words scarce, rare, &c., are used only sparingly-and not so frequently as the circumstances would often warrant. The intelligent collector will not, however, need to be advised on this point. The necessity for extreme expedition in the preparation of this Catalogue in time for the sale this season, has rather outweighed the inclination of its compiler to go into further detail when describing some of the books. For the same reason some errors of the Press have passed uncorrected. The Title Pages of the books printed by Franklin, and old Pamphlets relating to America are generally given at length, with their collations. The condition of the books is unusually fine. The binding in the best style of Messrs. Pawson & Nicholson, of Philadelphia.
