He haunted my waking imagination,' and pursued me in my dreams at night..........I endeavored to shake off the intruder, and made up my mind to shun any future meeting; but as evening advanced, I found myself drawn irresistibly towards the sea coast....I followed....in spite of myself .......the walk along the sands, and arrived at the excavated rock.

Fatigued and dissatisfied I sat down .....and as I wondered at my ridiculous propensity to run after this singular man, he,........again.......stood before me.

I had placed my right elbow on my knee, reclining my head upon my hand....and, in this moody position, he found me......I looked up, and the solemn....mysterious....outside of this venerable stranger, recalled to my mind the imposition of my beautiful cousin, and the deception of the divine

Theoclea ;...and, instead of being as usual, inspired with confidence.....I began to doubt.

Circumstances had made me distrustful of appearances!

I summoned all my prudence to protect me against any specious view this new and singular adventure might teem with......How far I succeeded.... time will disclose.
