PREFACE.

A WORK of this kind needs no introduction to Eton Men, except for the opportunity it offers of thanking those who have kindly assisted me, and of correcting one or two misapprehensions as to the purpose of it.

My object has been, not to attempt anything like Biographical Notices, but simply to show who each Boy was, and what became of him, preserving as nearly as possible the old familiar look of the common School Lists. The great names of Eton are known to every one, and there are "Lives" of them in abundance. Many of the lesser stars are also to be found in the Gentleman's Magazine, the Annual Register, and other similar works. A reference to these may be assisted by the date of death, which I have given where I could. And the works of Mr. Walford and Sir Bernard Burke will supply further information about many of the living.

But there still remain many not so well known in the world, who have imbibed equal excellencies from our common Mother, ETON, and have been just as useful and estimable in their own walk of life, but have no " Vates sacer" to record their virtues. Such men indeed deserve a much longer note than my limited space would allow, but it is for the "own familiar friend" of each, and not for a stranger, to tread on such delicate ground.

Most Eton men, old or young, have a vivid impression of their boyish days, and their school "cons." Some of these early friends have run through life
