THE following pages were suggested by the delightful little treatise of the "saintly" Herbert, "The Priest to the Temple, or the Country Parson;" but neither from that, or from Mr. Roberts' popular work, "The Portraiture of the Christian Gentleman," am I aware that I have at all borrowed my materials. My object has been to present a course of Christian conduct in the higher walks of life; I have endeavoured, therefore to confine myself, as far as possible, to what may be considered strictly practical. I have a strong feeling against a layman engaging in controversial topics; and in declaring my adhesion to Church principles, I understand such principles as were asserted by our Reformers and their illustrious successors, and upon which the Church
