He also repeated that verse of the xxxii. Para phrase:

• God is the treasure of my soul,
The source of lasting joy;
A joy that want shall not impair,
Nor death itself destroy.'

The last verse of Addison's beautiful hymn he also often quoted:

Through all eternity to thee

A joyful song I'll raise;
For, Oh! eternity's too short
To utter all his praise.'

After commending his family to God in prayer, he quietly fell asleep in Jesus."

The excellent father and pastor is now no more! Ah! how does this word no more harrow up all the tender feelings of the heart! They shall see his face no more: no more shall they hear that voice which, for the space of forty-one years, was accustomed to address them in strains sweet and solemn as those which were heard at Bethlehem when angels shouted, "Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth and good will towards men." In such circumstances, nature nor Christianity forbids them to feel, nor even to indulge in all the luxury of sanctified grief; but let them not sorrow as those who have no hope-the precious, the worthy, the excellent Mr. Shirreff, their friend, their guide, their comforter, still lives. It was only his inferior part that was shrouded in a coffin, and deposited, with pain and sadness, in the cold earth,

his better part has sustained no injury. The saint has now entered the realms of light, and there lives, and shall for ever live, in the presence of his God, and in the embraces of his love. All his troubles have fled away, all his wants are supplied; his wishes are all fulfilled, except it may be this one wish, (and here I avail myself of the sentiments of a pious writer,) that the mystery of God may be finished, and all the members of the body of Christ may be raised to the enjoyment of the same happiness with himself. He is dead, but he lives embalmed in the hearts of many; he is dead, but he yet speaketh in the precious doctrines which he taught, in the supplications which he presented to God, and in the pious example which he uniformly exhibited. Happy they who continue in the belief of these doctrines, in the imitation of his holy example, and in the confidence of an answer to such effectual fervent prayers! The God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the everlasting covenant, shall make them perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in them that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

EXTRACTS FROM DIARY.

Written in his early youth.-O Lord God, unworthy I do desire to take hold of and enter into covenant with thee. These texts bespeak the language of my heart, Isa. xxvi. 13, “O Lord my God, other Lords beside thee have had dominion over me, but by thee only will I make mention of thy name;" Hosea xiv. 3. "Ashur shall not save me, neither will I ride upon horses, neither will I say any more to the work of my hands, ye are my gods, for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy." In the appropriating words of David, I say, Ps. cxvi. 16. " Oh Lord, truly I am thy servant, I am thy servant, thou hast loosed my bonds." Again, Ps. xviii. 1, 2. "I will love thee, O Lord my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer-my God, my strength in whom I will trust-my buckler and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower." Let this be ratified in all ages, and confirmed in heaven; yea, mine own God is hethy word

allows me to say so, Ps. 1. 7. "I will testify against thee. I am God, even thy God:" thine am I, and on thy side, O thou Son of the Most High. I take heaven, earth and hell, and all in them and about me to witness what I have now done-thine own word binds thee to keep me, and I do hereby bind myself by thy grace to devote myself to thee only, wholly and for ever; all that I am, all that I have, all that is bestowed on me shall be at thy service.

ROBERT SHERRIFF, Amen, amen, and amen.

I would still adhere to these sentiments, and do again say amen unto them. No iniquity is to be found in the Lord.

In another paper, without date, it is written as follows:-Sensible of my deficiencies and daily failings, what can I do but have recourse to the blood of sprinkling-the blood of Jesus that cleanseth us from all sin ! Comfortable words! not some sins, not one sin only, but from all sin. He is faithful and just upon our confession to forgive us our sin, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Lord God I know that thy word is directed to men, and to the sons of men; unto you is the word of this salvation sent. Now since these are thine own words plainly warranting me, amongst the rest of sinners, to apply for salvation, Lord, I do it,—O I do it! and rely upon thee alone for whatever I want for whatever my needs require. I am a poor tempted harrassed creature, as if there were seven devils in me. But to whom can I go, unless unto thee, Glorious Captain of salvation, who hath vanquished them all in his own person on the cross, and who will, I believe, make me shortly more than a conqueror! Through this assistance, and this only, for I have
