PAGE WOODCOCK'S WIND PILLS

TO MR. PAGE D. WOODCOCK.

MANCHESTER, June 13th, 1877.

SIR, I have found your Pills an excellent preparation for the Constipation and Flatulency so common in both sexes. They possess great advantages over other Pills. Their uniformity in strength, the smallness of the dose, and the certainty of their action, commend them to those who require a Tonic to assist digestion, relieve Wind in the Stomach, exert a special influence on the Liver, and also the peristaltic motion of the Bowels, resulting from Chronic Indigestion and lack of Assimilation. The more my experience in their varied applicability extends, the more their beneficial effects appear, and many households have found a great friend in your preparation, for the promotion of a healthy digestion. Their favourable action are all that could be wished for. I am, faithfully yours, THOS. FOSTER KER, Surgeon.

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.

LIVER, LUNGS, AND KIDNEYS.-Most diseases of these depurative organs arise from obstructions, over the removal of which these celebrated Pills exercise the most perfect control. A course of them is strongly recommended as a remedy for such chronic affections as liver enlargements, congestion of the lungs, torpidity of the kidneys, and other functional disorders which cause much present suffering, and if neglected, lay the foundation of organic diseases. Holloway's Pills are specially adapted for the young and delicate; their gentle and purifying action ranks them above all other medicines. In indigestion, nervous affections, gout, and rheumatism, these Pills have achieved for themselves universal fame. They expel all impurities from the blood, and thus restore cheerfulness and vigour.

American Church Life.*

In its main features Church Life in America resembles that in England. Indeed so much is there alike in the two countries, that a pastor going from one land to the other, will, without much difficulty, quickly adjust himself to the new surroundings.

Peculiarities of American Church Life arise from various causes, and so differ in proportion to the local strength of those causes. This being the case, we shall not hastily pronounce a report of American church life inaccurate, even though its colouring may differ from our

Own.

The Race Element is a powerful modifier of customs, and in the United States this force is remarkably strong. There are millions of the imaginative and emotional negroes, whose fervent and eccentric worship seems often like a wild frenzy. On the other hand, there are the intellectual Northmen, English, Scotch, Germans, and native-born Americans, besides the Scandinavians, French, Dutch, and Russians. Each nationality has some distinctive tendency that gives an individuality to the religious life, and when the foreigners group themselves they preserve for a long time their own ecclesiastical customs. But through an intermingling of the population, a compromise of method in church work is often secured. When you find a community representing many localities, a pastor may, without creating friction, introduce customs which prevail elsewhere, or may put into practice original plans, provided they do not violate the Christian spirit. He may vary his Sunday services by omitting the evening sermon and substituting a lecture, Bible-reading, or Sunday school concert. Sunday school programme may be changed whenever there is a sensible reason given. The prayer-meeting may be enlivened by responsive readings, conversations, or addresses, with black-board illustrations. As a rule the people will fall in with your suggestions. The chief thing is effectiveness, and any method is approved which helps to make "a good meeting."
