Above is a crowned shield, impaled with the arms of France and Scotland. This rare print, which has no engraver's name nor date, is attributed by Prince A. Labanoff to Jerome Wierix, who died in 1608. The date was probably 1588. Underneath are twenty lines of Latin verse, beginning "En tibi magnanima spirantia Principis ora," signed "G. C. Scotus." These lines are given in Labanoff's Catalogue, p. 192, but he omits to state that the author was George Crichton, a native of Edinburgh, who became Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Paris. He was author of numerous Latin tracts, from 1583 to 1610; and died at Paris 1611, aged 56.
