alone? Another speech was made by a man named Ouderkirk, on October 23, 1919, in a garage on Mary street, Utica, at which there were present three or four hundred men and women mill workers. Ouderkirk said: "The time has come when you should use your brains and your hands to keep the scabs out of the mills. If it is necessary for some to go to the electric chair, the gallows, we will go, but where we leave off there will be many more to carry on our banner. The Amalgamated will open cooperative stores and we will not deal with the profiteers. We will be free from the democratized, Catholicised scab, whether he is an American or just a plain gink. It is you that produced the nice automobile, the fine steam yacht, the Parlor and Pullman cars, and all the wealth for the capitalists, and instead of you using them you get the second-hand bicycle and a dusty, dirty old coach, and have your sons sent to France to fight for these damned profiteers. Go out to the mills and keep the scabs from work. Keep them out anyway. There is no use of disguising it any longer. It is a battle. Go out and fight it." It was also discovered by the investigators of the Committee that in the premises 704 Bleeker street, Utica, there was an anarchist group known as the Francesco Ferrer Circle. This circle had quite a substantial anarchist library, and among the books that appeared to be particularly popular was one called "L' Emigrazion Sconoscuita". This book dealt with various groups, such as the Black Hand, the Camorra and others, and the preface was written by Luigi Galliani, one of the leading anarchists in the world to-day, who was deported from the United States, in May, 1919. A large mass of revolutionary anarchistic material was found at these premises, 704 Bleeker street, which had been prepared for circulation among the workers in the shops and factories of Utica. In Rome considerable revolutionary radical activity was noted. In the summer of 1919 there was conducted a very violent strike, and at times this assumed such proportions that companies of the State Constabulary had to be sent into the city to suppress violent riots. This strike was precipitated by I. W. W. agitators and the names of 115 of these men were obtained by the Committee. A large part of the information obtained as a result of the investigation of this Committee in those portions of the State referred to in the preceding zones cannot be given with any greater detail, by reason of the fact that a large number of indictments under the Criminal Anarchy Statute of this State are pending. These indictments will in the very near future be tried by the prosecuting officers of the counties in which the offenses occurred, and it might defeat the ends of justice if the information obtained were at this time divulged. It is for this reason that this chapter does not give with greater particularity facts that might be of considerable interest in the report. |
