thus the rock of salvation became to him a rock of destruction. There is a death in death: from this may God in his mercy deliver us ! For this death not only divides the soul from the body, but also, from God and His holy dwelling, and that for ever! It extinguishes for ever the sun, which, as long as we continue here below, sheds its genial rays on the ungodly as well as the righteous, and delivers up sinners to that night whose dreadful gloom is illumined by no hope, penetrated by no aurora of promise. No one, whatever joys may blossom around him in the present life, is to be esteemed happy before he knows that he is released from the danger of that dreadful death, and until he sees his path of life secured beyond that gulf. But no human merit, no earthly crown of honour, secures against the precipitation into this abyss of destruction; the only bridge which leads over it is Christ, our righteousness and our life; and to surrender ourself unto Him with our whole soul, with the whole strength of our love, as Mary, who, sitting at His feet, therein chose the "good part,” that she held Him in childish innocence as the Lord, who was come, not that He should be ministered unto, but that he should minister;" that is the one thing which is needful; that alone is the wisdom of the righteous. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life."1 66 O thou blessed security, in which we have to rejoice through Christ. There is no storm, whose power breaks not in Him; no evil, which is not transformed by 1 John, v. 24. Him into a blessing. He extends for us over all chasms the bridge of His Almighty protection; He bears us on eagle's wings over rivers and mountains. The prospect of the future of our life, is clear and serene until beyond the day of judgment. The stones of stumbling are removed from our path, and the ambuscades portending danger are disbanded or at least disarmed. O, happy then are those who, escaped from the errors of the world, have cast their anchor on the bright shore of the eternal gospel, and, supported by the Friend who promises and provides every thing, walk on the road of their pilgrimage, which leads to the city of golden streets. It is in the ranks of these pilgrims, and here only, where is sung the great song of victory: "O death, where is thy sting! grave where is thy victory!" THE END.
