PREFACE.

THIS little book is set afloat on the stream that carries out to a dark and devouring sea so many similar books, neither from a false estimate of its real worth, nor to challenge the criticism of the learned; but in deference to the desire of many kind friends who have expressed their appreciation of the pulpit labours of the Author, and in hope that the printed page may prove a vindication from the miserable and mischievous cry, "Not the Gospel."

Preparations for the ordinary Sunday ministrations, of necessity are more or less fragmentary and tautologic. The changeable congregation of a seaport town specially demands that in a series, however brief, the several discourses should hold but loosely together. Simple, as molten and clarified by the fire of thought,-practical, as the outcome of deep spiritual consciousness, and sugges
