plate of No. 213, "Nocturne Furnace," with important variation, I vol. of text, imp. 8vo., boards, uncut, and 6 vol., 4to., hf. mor., together 7 vol., New York, Grolier Club, 1910 (26), Jan. 13, American Art Association $600

[One of 402 copies printed at the De Vinne Press, on old Stratford paper. There are 442 etchings, chronologically described, many with the assistance of Whistler, or from memoranda left by him; prints have been measured and the variations in size marked. A complete list of the plates known to have been destroyed or cancelled is included, with an additional list of 80 plates, which from their rarity may be assumed to have passed out of existence. Many of the cancelled plates are reproduced. There are over 1,000 reproductions showing various states of the plates. The author, in his "Notes,' gives a very interesting account of his interview with Whistler concerning the proposed catalogue which resulted in securing his hearty consent and co-operation. This monumental work is seldom met with at public sales. This copy, with a few other Whistler books, was included in the sale of the remarkable collection of unpublished correspondence of J. A. McNeill Whistler, together with autograph letters of authors and artists of his day, addressed to William Heinemann, the London publisher, to which were added books by and relating to Whistler, the property of Miss Susan Minns, of Boston. The sale at the American Art Galleries, on the afternoon of Jan. 13, extended to 390 lots, and realised $4,967.] Whistler (J. A. M.)
