Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, published according to the true original copies, the third impression, port. by Droeshout on title, old cf. [The order of the preliminary leaves is as follows: (1) Leaf, recto blank, port. and verses and verses on verso; (2) First issue of the title-page, with imprint, Printed for Philip Chetwinde, 1663; (3) To the great variety of readers, 2 pp.;_ (4) Leaf, recto blank, verses on the port. on verso; (5) Dedication to William, Earl of Pembroke, 2 pp.; (6) Title-page as above (7-11), various verses; (12) Names of actors and contents, 2 pp. It should be noted that the text of Shakespeare's Works is complete, and that a spurious play, viz., The Puritan Widow, is defective by 2 11. The volume has been carefully examined and collated, and all defects noticed have been mentioned, but it will, as usual, be sold not subject to return. No marks of former ownership occur in the volume, but this copy is known to have belonged to Lætitia Somner, great-grand-daughter of William Somner, the antiquary (1598-1669).] Shakespeare (W.) Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, published according to the true originall copies, the third impression [second issue], and unto this impression is added seven playes, never before printed in folio, port. by Droeshout, with verses beneath (cut round and inlaid), a few headlines cut into, on p. 439 (Hen. [Second issue of the third ed., with the seven spurious plays annexed. Measures 12 in. by 8 in.] Shakespeare (W.) Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, published according to the true original copies, the third impression, and unto this impression is added seven Playes never before printed in folio, port. by Droeshout, with verses beneath, preceded by the very rare separate leaf with Ben Jonson's verses in large type (wants leaf of dedication to the Earl of Pembroke), blank margin of port., title and several ll. slightly defective, a few tiny rust-holes and tears, lower corners torn off p. 313, taking away several words, and p. 871 injuring a few letters, some 11. stained, strip cut off last leaf, taking away the foot of the tailpiece, small wormholes in lower back margins from p. 749 to end, otherwise a large clean copy in good condition, late xvi1th century, cf., blind tooled (worn), Printed for P. C. [i.e., Philip Chetwynd], 1664, folio (13 in. by 81 in.), (172), June 28, Sotheby Bell, £580

[The separate leaf with Ben Jonson's verses in large type is of extraordinary rarity. The present copy, like those with the 1663 title, does not contain the seven spurious plays, ending with Cymbeline, nor has it ever contained them, the 17th century undisturbed calf binding showing that about 1680 it was in exactly the same state as now. The Tempest has a number of early marginal and other annotations, chiefly in Latin, those in the margins partly cut away by the binder. One on p. 9 reads: Jack Smith gone to London beginning of Ŝeptember, 1671, a Holy-day ffool." The volume has been carefully examined and collated, and all defects noticed have been mentioned, but it will, as usual, be sold not subject to return. The name of probably the first owner, Robert Simpson, is on the title, and on the verso is the inscription: Chr. Coleby Rec. de Midleham me jure tenet.' Coleby was rector and dean of Middleham, Yorks., and in 1744 his widow gave the volume to Mr. Jno. Yarker, and the name Chris. Yarker occurs several times on a fly-leaf.]
