A Mother's tender figh was heav'd in vain;-
In vain a fifter dropt the fruitlefs tear;-
The cruel tyrant revell'd in their pain,

And turn'd to all their cries a deafen'd ear!

The much lov'd Maid, with fweet compofure faw,
The fwift approaches of her ruthless foe,
Yielded fubmiffive to fair nature's law,
And meekly waited the' expected blow.

By faith the view'd the dying LAMB OF GOD,
Hang agonizing on the' accurfed Tree:

Her confcience felt the Virtue of his Blood,

And cried, My Jesus thus was pierc'd for me!"

"The King of Heaven to this vile earth came down, "For me he fuffer'd, and for me he died, "And now he pleads my caufe before the Throne, And fhews his wounded Hands, and bleeding Side:

"Nor does he offer fuch a Plea in vain,

"I feel, I feel the gracious anfwer given,-
"Sweet peace and hope within my bofom reign;-
"A prefent pardon, and a future heaven.

While thus the dying Saint triumphant lay
Her fpirit burit its chains, (too long confin'd,)
Then fpread its wings, and rofe, and foar'd away,
Leaving its clayey tenement behind.

Ye dear furvivors of my valued Friend,

Permit my heart your facred griefs to fhare,
While thus my rifing figh with your's I blend,
And mix with your's my fympathetic tear.

To each fond Relative paft joys return,
And mock with fhadows the revolving mind,
Forcing the bleeding heart afresh to mourn,

The much lov'd duft,-to kindred duft confign'd.

O may the mighty Gop of Peace and Love,

Pour in your wounded breasts an healing balm;
With fov'reign power each anxious pang remove,
And smile the conflict to a perfect calm.

May He direct your thoughts to worlds above,
Where pleafures flourish in perpetual spring
Where ranfom'd fouls ecftatic tranfports prove,
And drink immortal draughts of Glory in.

There

There ftands your MARY,-near her SAVIOUR's feat,-
Bleft far beyond our utmoft ftretch of thought,
She cafts her blood-bought Crown at JESU's Feet,

And fings the wonders that his Grace hath wrought.

"Worthy art thou, my deareft LORD,---the Lamb,---
"Of praifes more than angel-tongues can give ;—
Still will I fpeak the Honours of thy Name,
"While thro',eternal years I thus shall live.

"Twas thy creating Love fitft gave me breath,
"Thy pity freed me from fin's iron chain,
"Thou mad'ft me conqueror o'er the tyrant death,
"And fav'dft my foul from everlasting pain.

"Now rais'd by thee to realms of endless joy,
"My greateft blifs is here thy Face to fee;

"Loud Hallelujahs all my powers employ,

"While thus I worship the great ONE IN THREE."

Thus does the triumph in the heavenly plains,

And fing the wonders of redeeming Grace; While we below in feeble dying ftrains,

With fault'ring tongues our poor Hofannahs raife.

Yet let us lift to heaven our longing eyes,

And hope, and think,-the time will not be long, Ere we fhall join the Concert of the Skies,

And fing the' harmonious, never-ending Song.

Soon fhall death free our fouls from every chain, And waft us fafely to yon blifsful Shore; There fhall we meet our long loft Friends again, No more to forrow, and to part no more. Sandwich.

2 Thou haft oft my Shelter been,
My ftrong defenfive Tower,
Sav'd me from the world and fin,
And all the' accufer's power:
Still I in thy house abide,
And never, never hence remove;
Still determin'd to confide,

In thy redeeming Love.

3 Thou, O GOD, my vows haft heard,
And given me my requeft,
Earneft of the joys prepar'd,

For all that know thy Reft:
Thou, O Lord, the Portion art,
Of those that humbly fear thy Name;
Thou haft vifited my heart,

And thine, in Chrift, I am.

4 One of JESU's kings I reign,
Wath'd in his cleanfing Blood,
Righteous before God remain,
And live the life of GOD :
Ready is thy Truth and Grace,
Still to preserve and perfect me;
Thou wilt lengthen out my days,
To all Eternity,

5 Joyful in this bleffed hope,-
O glorify thy Name;
Till thy mercy take me up,---
Thy mercy I proclaim;
Throughout every happy day,
On this delightful task attend;
All I owe in love repay,

And love Thee to the end.
