Strabo 1. 9. fays that fome thought this the name of a town, others that Homer meant by it this part of Theffaly in general, (which laft feems moft probable.) Steph. Bykant. obferves, there was a city Ar gos in Theffaly, as well as in Peloponnefus, the former was call'd Pelafgic in contradiftintion to the Achaian: for tho' the Pelafgi poffeft feveral parts of Epirus, Crete, Peloponnefus, c. yet they retain'd their principal feat in Theffaly. The Hellenes. This denomi nation, afterwards common to all the Greeks, is here to be understood only of those who inhabited Phthiotis. It was not 'till long after Homer's time that the people of other cities of Greece defiring affiftance from thefe, began to have the fame name from their communication with them, as Thucydide's remarks in the beginning of his first book.

between Antron and Pyrrhafus : But Pleny defcribes it with great exactness to lie on the thore towards Baotia, on the confines of Phthietis, upon the river Sperchins; according to which particulars, it must have been feated as I have placed it. Livy alfo feats it on the Sperchins.
