THE ECCLESIASTICAL ANTIQUITIES OF

THE CYMRI;

OR

The Ancient British Church ;

ITS HISTORY, DOCTRINE, AND RITES.
BY THE REV. JOHN WILLIAMS, M.A.,

Perpetual Curate of Nerquis, Diocese of St. Asaph.

"To say that Mr. Williams has produced an interesting and valuable work on the Ecclesiastical History of Britain, would convey a very imperfect idea of the obligations under which he has placed all students of that most important subject. The author is evidently very warmly attached to the ancient church and people, with whom he is so closely connected; but this partiality has not, we are sure, consciously influenced his judgment; and the care and labour which he has bestowed on the national records of Wales, combined with extensive research into all authorities bearing on his subject, entitle him to the respect which will, we doubt not, be awarded him."-English Review.

"This is an important and valuable work. Mr. Williams brings forth the stores of British Antiquity still remaining in the Welsh language; by means of which, in conjunction with those more accessible sources hitherto well known, he appears to have succeeded in giving us a more exact and probable account than we have yet seen. We are very glad, indeed, to have met with this work, indispensable to the student of British Ecclesiastical History."-Church Magazine

"This is one of the most wonderful books we have seen for some time. The research and information which Mr. Williams has evinced in the treatment of his subject is truly astonishing, combining, as it does, originality, industry, and learning, with clearness of arrangement, good taste, and a truly patriotic and church spirit. This is indeed a book which Wales should be proud of, and which England should be thankful for."-N. Wales Chronicle.

"This is one of the most valuable of all the works that have been lately published on Ecclesiastical Antiquities, and one to which we can give our hearty commendation. It evinces extensive research, and much learning, ability, and judgment in the compilation, arrangement, and use of the materials which the author had at command."-Churchman's Newspaper.

"Those persons who desire to make them.1.es fully acquainted with the origin and early progress of Christianity in our island, cannot do better than consult the work now before us."-Cheltenham Looker-on.

"This work will be read with great interest."-Court Gazette.

"We are glad to find the curious relics of Welsh literature adapted to the purposes of history. Upon these, principally, is the work before us founded, and a very interesting work it is. We heartily recommend Mr. Williams' book to the study of all Churchmen and Antiquarians."-Morning Post.

"An interesting series of Chapters, on the Ecclesiastical Antiquities of the Cymry, by the Rev. J. Williams."-British Magazine.

"To such as from circumstances, or other lines of study, have not hitherto thought much of the ancient British Church, this volume will prove deeply important. We have read the present work with very great satisfaction and interest; and the only wonder is, that this very prolific mine of the Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Wales has not been fully opened before."-Christian Remembrancer.

"The highly enthusiastic writer of the work before us has occupied himself on this publication evidently as a labour of love. The details connected with the early

British Church are highly valuable. We have to acknowledge our deep obliga-
tions to Mr. Williams for much information of a rare and valuable character. No
British Churchman's Library should be without his book.
It enters into many

points untouched by Mr. Soames, and forms a highly valuable addition to our literature; nor do we value it the less for its deep piety and churchmanlike spirit." -New Quarerly Review.

This book contains a large body of what may be termed new information upon the Ancient British Church; it is the fruit of deep research and study, and presents such a compendious view of the subject, that its usefulness will be acknowledged by every antiquarian and theologian who refers to it.

Since the above was written, we have been informed of a most important addition to be made to the work, which will delay its appearance for some time, viz. the Pedigrees of the Montgomeryshire families. The original copy of these, by Lewys Dwnn has been lost, and is nowhere to be found, though it was in existence in 1711, when Sein Rytherch, or "John Roderic," the poet and grammarian, who resided at Shrewsbury, made a transcript of the Pedigrees, or rather made a translation of them into English. This copy, by Sein Rytherch, was in the possession of Lord Berwick, at Attingham House, near Shrewsbury, who sold it to Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., in whose possession it now remains, and who has liberally furnished the Welsh MSS. Society with a transcript for publication, which Mr. Morris of Shrewsbury has kindly undertaken to correct from other materials in his possession, and is now being printed off at the Llandovery Press. The above important addition, together with the Pedigrees of the additional counties mentioned above, will entail a heavy expense upon the Welsh MSS. Society, which we trust will soon be made up by a large accession of fresh members, and by liberal contributions from those who have the means, and are actuated by a patriotic desire to preserve whatever is valuable in our ancient MSS. literature.- ED. OF ARCH. CAMB.

THE FOLLOWING CIRCULAR HAS BEEN PRINTED BY THE WELSH MSS. SOCIETY.

Llanover Vicarage, Abergavenny, January, 1845. Sir, I am requested by the Committe of the Welsh MSS. Society, to inform you that the Volume of the late IOLO MORGANWG'S MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION OF йISTORICAL AND OTHER MSS. is not ready for delivery, in consequence of the serious illness of the editor, Mr. Taliesin Williams, (Ab Iolo); although between four and five hundred pages of the same have been printed off.

The HERALDIC VISITATION OF WALES, by Lewys Dwnn, announced some time ago as being ready for the press, was afterwards kept back, as the funds of the Society would not warrant the Committee in venturing upon such an additional outlay as was necessary to ensure its ablication, with so many other works in hand; last year, however, an arrangement was entered into, by which the Work was put into the press, at the joint risk of the Society and its Publisher, and is now being printed with regularity and despatch, under the able and gratuitous superintendence of its indefatigable editor, Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick, K.H., F.S.A., &c.; and the whole Work, comprising Two Volumes, large Quarto, price Three Guineas, will be ready for delivery next autumn. A few copies are yet not engaged, which the Committee have for disposal to any Members who may wish to possess this truly National Production. An early application for the same is, however, requested.

The LIVES OF THE BRITISH SAINTS, from Ancient MSS. in the British Museum and elsewhere, have been gratuitously prepared for the press, by the editor of the LIBER LANDAVENSIS, the Rev. W. J. Rees, M.A .F.S.A. &c. and shall be printed immediately after the publication of the HERALDIC VISITATION OF WALES.

The Committee deem it advisable not to call upon Members of the Society for payment of their annual subscriptions, due the 1st instant, until one of the above Works is actually out of the press; after which time it is hoped that an accession of fresh Members will place sufficient funds at the disposal of the Committe to ensure the publication of a large volume annually, until the stores of Welsh MSS. are completely exhausted. I have the honour to remain, Sir, your most obedient servant, JOHN EVANS, Honorary Secretary.

IN THE PRESS, NEARLY READY,

TO BE PUBLISHED BY SUBSCRIPTION, UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE WELSH MSS. SOCIETY,

BY WILLIAM REES, LLANDOVERY,

The Heraldic Visitations of Wales,

AND THE MARCHES THEREOF,

IN THE REIGN OF ELIZABETH.

BY LEWYS DWNN, DEPUTY HERALD AT ARMS FOR ALL Wales:

From such Original MSS. as still exist; with curious Engravings and
Illustrations; together with an Introduction and
numerous Explanatory Notes.

Edited by SIR SAMUEL RUSH MEYRICK, K.H. LL.D. F.S.A.

THE above Work, so peculiarly interesting to all the principal Families of Wales, and those inhabitants of the United Kingdom who claim a Welsh descent, is now in the press, and nearly all printed; having been gratuitously prepared by that learned and well-known Antiquary, Sir S. R. MEYRICK, at the request of the Welsh MSS. Society. As the Genealogies contained in the Work, together with the valuable Notes and Illustrations by the erudite Editor, are very interesting to numerous classes of society, it has been determined to limit the subscription to One Guinea and a Half for each volume. The Work, consisting of two volumes, imperial quarto, to be paid for on delivery.

[We believe that the number of copies still open to the public is less than ten at least we ourselves secured the eleventh. The progress of the work through the press has been most satisfactory, as the two volumes comprising nearly the whole of the work, were recently exhibited at the Eisteddfod of the Abergavenny Cymreigyddion; and the work would have been delivered to the subscribers long ere this had it not been for the introduction of much additional matter, beyond what was originally proposed to be given, viz. the Pedigrees of the counties of Radnor, Flint, and Denbigh, which will of course render the work much more complete and valuable. We understand that the whole edition is already engaged. As the work is likely to become extremely scarce, many of our readers will doubtless be unable to possess copies; and therefore, when it is published, we purpose giving such an account of its chief contents as may prove useful for reference. ED. ARCH. CAMB.]

PALEOGRAPHIA SACRA PICTORIA.

By J. O. WESTWOOD.

This is one of the most splendid works of the day. The numerous illustrations it contains of ancient copies of the Gospels, &c., are of the highest interest to lovers of art, and are useful to Antiquarians by enabling them to form accurate estimations of the dates of other MSS. which may come under their notice. Indeed it is difficult for those who have not seen it to form an idea of the great variety and beauty of the various fac-similes which the author has here brought together. The examination of such specimens is not only of great value in a Theological sense, but is also important to those who would compare the state of Medieval art in one nation with that in another. The explanatory and historical accounts of the various MSS. examined by Mr. Westwood are full of learned research, and cannot fail of rewarding the pains of the Antiquarian reader.
