[From Racine's library. On the title-page the French writer has written in a very neat hand his name "Racine,” which tallies exactly with the signature on the title-page of the "Cicero" exhibited in 1900 at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, No. 85. Racine, who was historiographer to the King of France, collected all the data he could find on the royal family, and annotated his books. In the present copy his marginal notations will be found on pp. 52, 56, 61, 62, 70, 71, 72, 73, 76, 77, 107, 109, and 121. The book was duly inventoried at Racine's death, and we find in the catalogue of his books made by J. Villery and C. Osmont the following entry: "7 vols., 4to. dont l'histoire de St. Louis appraised at 4 livres tournois" (line 120 of appraisal, May 14, 1699). Louis Racine inherited his father's library, and it was sold with his library in 1756. He gave to the library of Toulouse and to the Bibliothèque Royale some of his father's books. So far only 18 volumes with Racine's autograph and annotations have been traced. The above has the autograph of de Semonville Dardenay on title-page, and the G. de St. Genies bookplate.]
