[Philip Melanchthon's copy, with quotations, annotations, comments, etc. in his autograph on the end-papers and fly-leaves and in the margins throughout. That on the front end-paper is of interest as indicating the great reformer's opinion of learning. Freely rendered, it reads: "Whosoever shelters himself with the Roman toga and the Greek pallia together, will be warmed against even a Thracian blast." This volume contains the Odyssey and the minor works of Homer; a second, issued by Cephaleus, contains the Iliad. The edition is dedicated to Melanchthon, and the text follows the second and third Aldine editions. Laid in is an excerpt in Latin from an author who says he saw a Homer at Wittenberg annotated by Melanchthon. Also laid in are notes by Mr. Sutherland, who bought the book in 1846 at Pickering's, giving the statements of various authorities concerning

the genuineness of the autograph annotations. See also Ed. 1542-Sotheby, Dec. 13, £3 10s.; Ed. 1567—July 25, £7.] Homer. Opera [Græce], 2 vol., old russia, R. et A. Foulis, Glasguæ, 1756-8, folio (240), July 25, Christie
