[First edition as generally catalogued and accepted, although there was an edition published the previous year, which was immediately suppressed and withdrawn -four or five copies being known to have escaped destruction. Inscribed "R. Duckworth, with the sincere regards of the Author in memory of our voyage." Pasted beneath this is a short autograph note on a card: "Dear Duckworth, could you help to row my friends on Wednesday? Truly yours, C. L. Dodgson.' Facing these is

[The inscription in the latter book reads: "Presented to Edith Martin (as a memento of her having taken part in the Dream-Play Alice in Wonderland,' written by H. Savile-Clarke and first produced Christmas, 1886) by Lewis Carroll." The other inscription is identical, except for a slight change in the order of the words. Accompanying the books is a slip of paper on which Dodgson has written "The 'Alice Under Ground' was inscribed by mistake so both are sent. L. C." This is scribbled over in pencil in a childish hand.]
