SOME apology seems needed for adding another to the number of manuals offered to communicants of the Church of England. But those manuals which in matter are the most excellent appear to be most unsatisfactory in arrangement, so that simple people tell me "they cannot find their way through them," or "they never know where they are." I hope that the plan of printing the service in bold type at the top of the pages, and placing all notes and private prayers in smaller type underneath, will make this book easy to use, both at home and in church. So many as intend to be partakers of the Holy Communion shall signify their names to the Curate, at least some time the day before. And there shall none be admitted to the Holy Communion, until such time as he be confirmed, or be ready and desirous to be confirmed. INSTRUCTION. THE HOLY COMMUNION is a Sacrament appointed for us by our Lord Jesus Christ, by which we present before GOD the remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ, and by which we also receive spiritual food for our souls. It may be convenient to put our explanation into the form of question and answer, as follows:— What is the first purpose for which Holy Communion is celebrated? For a continual remembrance of the Sacrifice of the death of Christ, and of the benefits we receive thereby. To whom do we make remembrance of the Sacrifice of the death of Christ? We make this remembrance to GOD, to give Him honour and glory, and to obtain graces and blessings through Jesus Christ. |
