b But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat, 1 Cor. v. 11. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, vi. 9. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats : but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power. Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What! know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body, 13-18. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband, vii. 2. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints, Eph. v. 3. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience, Col. iii. 5, 6. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication, 1 Thess. iv. 3.

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat, Gen. ix. 4. And whatsoever man

there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth, and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the VOL. II.

children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof; whosoever eateth it shall be cut off, Lev. iv. 13, 14. Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh, Deut. xii. 23.

VER. 21.

πόλιν τοὺς κηρύσσοντας αὐτὸν ἔχει, ἐν ταῖς Μωσῆς γὰρ ἐκ γενεῶν ἀρχαίων κατὰ συναγωγαῖς κατὰ πᾶν σάββατον ἀναγινωσκόμενος.

VER. 22.

Τότε ἔδοξε τοῖς ἀποστόλοις καὶ τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις σὺν ὅλῃ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ, ἐκλεξαμένους ἄνδρας ἐξ αὐτῶν, πέμψαι εἰς ̓Αντιόχειαν σὺν τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ Βαρνάβᾳ· Ἰούδαν τὸν ἐπικαλούμενον Βαρσαβᾶν, καὶ | Σίλαν, ἄνδρας ἡγουμένους ἐν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς·

ders, with the whole church, to send Then pleased it the apostles and elchosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, a Judas surnamed Barsabas, band Silas, chief men among the brethren.

a And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias, Acts i. 23.

b And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them, ver. 32. And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the market-place, unto the rulers, xvi. 19.

VER. 23.

Γράψαντες διὰ χειρὸς αὐτῶν τάδε· Οἱ ἀπόστολοι καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ, τοῖς κατὰ τὴν ̓Αντιόχειαν καὶ Συρίαν καὶ Κιλικίαν ἀδελφοῖς τοῖς ἐξ ἔθνῶν, χαίρειν.

And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: 2 G

Ἐπειδὴ ἠκούσαμεν ὅτι τινες, ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐξελθόντες ἐτάραξαν ὑμᾶς λόγοις, αναστ κευάζοντες τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν, λέγοντες περιτέμνεσθαι, καὶ τηρεῖν τὸν νόμον, οἷς οὐ διεστειλάμεθα·

* Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

* And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you, Gal. ii. 4, 5. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake, Tit. i. 10, 11.

VER. 25.

Ἔδοξεν ἡμῖν γενομένοις ὁμοθυμαδόν, ἐκλεξαμένους ἄνδρας πέμψαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς σὺν τοῖς ἀγαπητοῖς ἡμῶν Βαρνάβα καὶ Παύλω,

It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

VER. 26.

̓Ανθρώποις παραδεδωκόσι τὰς ψυχὰς αὑτῶν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ Κυρίου ὑμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

a Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

a But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium, Acts xiii. 50, 51. And there came thither certain Jews from An

tioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead, xiv. 19.

VER. 39.

Ἐγένετο οὖν παροξυσμὸς, ὥστε ἀποχω ρισθῆναι αὐτοὺς ἀπ ̓ ἀλλήλων· τόν τε Βαρνάβαν παραλαβόντα τὸν Μάρκον, ἐκπλεῦσαι εἰς Κύπρον·

And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

VER. 40.

Παῦλος δὲ ἐπιλεξάμενος Σίλαν, ἐξῆλθε, παραδοθεὶς τῇ χάριτι τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν.

And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

VER. 41.

Διήρχετο δὲ τὴν Συρίαν καὶ Κιλικίαν, ἐπιστηρίζων τὰς ἐκκλησίας.

And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

CHAP. XVI.-VER. 1. Κατήντησε δὲ εἰς Δερβὴν καὶ Λύστραν • καὶ ἰδοὺ, μαθητής τις ἦν ἐκεῖ ὀνόματι Τιμόθεος, υἱὸς γυναικός τινος Ἰουδαίας πιστῆς, πατρὸς δὲ Ἕλληνος,

Then came he to Derbe und Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, 3 the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek :

a Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also, 2 Tim. ii. 4, 5.

And as they went through the cities, a they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

VER. 5.

Αἱ μὲν οὖν ἐκκλησίαι ἐστερεοῦντο τῇ πίστει, καὶ ἐπερίσσευον τῷ ἀριθμῷ καθ ̓ ἡμέραν.

And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

VER. 6.

Διελθόντες δὲ τὴν Φρυγίαν καὶ τὴν Γα

λατικὴν χώραν, κωλυθέντες ὑπὸ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος λαλῆσαι τὸν λόγον ἐν τῇ Ασία.

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, a and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

VER. 7.

̓Ελθόντες κατὰ τὴν Μυσίαν, ἐπείραζον κατὰ τὴν Βιθυνίαν πορεύεσθαι· καὶ οὐκ εἴασεν αὐτοὺς τὸ Πνεῦμα.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

Καὶ ὅραμα διὰ τῆς νυκτὸς ὤφθη τῷ Παύλω. Ανήρ τις ἦν Μακεδὼν ἑστὼς παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν, καὶ λέγων· Διαβὰς εἰς Μακεδονίαν, βοήθησον ἡμῖν.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night ; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

Τῇ τε ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων ἐξήλθομεν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως παρὰ ποταμὸν, οὗ ἐνομί

Παρελθόντες δὲ τὴν Μυσίαν, κατέβησαν ζετο προσευχὴ εἶναι· καὶ καθίσαντες ἐλα

εἰς Τρωάδα.

And they passing by Mysia came down to Treas.

λοῦμεν ταῖς συνελθούσαις γυναιξί,

And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer

was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

VER. 14.

Καί τις γυνὴ ὀνόματι Λυδία, πορφυρόπωλις, πόλεως Θυατείρων, σεβομένη τὸν Θεὶν, ἤκουεν· ἧς ὁ Κύριος διήνοιξε τὴν καρδίαν, προσέχειν τοῖς λαλουμένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ Παύλου.

And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us ; a whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

Ως δὲ ἐβαπτίσθη, καὶ ὁ οἶκος αὐτῆς, παρεκάλεσε, λέγουσα· Εἰ κεκρίκατέ με πιστὴν τῷ Κυρίῳ εἶναι, εἰσελθόντες εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου, μείνατε. Καὶ παρεβιάσατο ἡμᾶς.

a And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

Τοῦτο δὲ ἐποίει ἐπὶ πολλὰς ἡμέρας. Διαπονηθεὶς δὲ ὁ Παῦλος, καὶ ἐπιστρέψας, τῷ πνεύματι εἶπε· Παραγγέλλω σοι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐξελθεῖν ἀπ ̓ αὐτῆς. Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ.

And this did she many days. But the spirit, I command thee in the name Paul, being grieved, turned and said to of Jesus Christ to come out of her. ↳ And he came out the same hour.

And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

VER. 22.

Καὶ συνεπέστη ὁ ὄχλος κατ' αὐτῶν· καὶ οἱ στρατηγοί περιῤῥήξαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάς τια, ἐκέλευον ῥαβδίζειν

And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
