ACTS XIII. 41-45.

A. D. 45.

is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act, xxviii. 14—21.

VER. 42.

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

* Gr. in the week between; or, in the sabbath between.

a See on Matt. xix. ver. 30.

VER. 43.

days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. a Because I have called, and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof; I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you; Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof; Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices, Prov. i. 24-31. Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust. Because they have cast away the law of the Lons of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel, Isa. v. 24. Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, and rule this people which is in Jerusalem: Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing Scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation he that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then shall be trodden down by it. ye From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by moring shall it pass over, by day and by night; and it shall be a vexation only Ιδόντες δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τοὺς ὄχλους, to understand the report. Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, a persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

a See on John viii. ver. 31. b By whom also we have access by faith into this wherein we stand, grace and rejoice in hope of the glory of God, Rom. v. 2. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law: ye are fallen from grace, Gal. v. 4. By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand,

1 Pet. v. 12.

VER. 44.

τοῦ Παύλου λεγομένοις, ἀντιλέγοντες καὶ | they were glad, and glorified the word βλασφημοῦντες. of the Lord: and as many as were bordained to eternal life believed.

a But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

a LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them, Isa. xxvi. 11. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in, Matt. xxiii. 13.

a And other sheep I have which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd, John x. 16. What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded, Rom. xi. 7. But God who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus; That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith ; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created which God hath before ordained that in Christ Jesus unto good works, 10. But we are bound to give thanks we should walk in them, Eph. ii. 4 alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth; Whereunto he called you by our Gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 Thess. ii. 13, 14. b And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, there it shall be told thee of all things Arise, and go into Damascus; and which are appointed for thee to do Acts xxii. 10. And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening, xxviii. 23.

And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye the living God, c which made heaven, should turn from these vanities unto and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

a They that make a graven image are all of them vanity, and their delectable things shall not profit: and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? Isa. xliv. 9, 10. They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith, and he maketh it worship. They bear him upon the a god: they fall down; yea, they shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove; he not answer, nor save him out of yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can his trouble. Remember this, and shew yourselves men; bring it again to For the customs of the people are vain: mind, Ο ye transgressors, xlvi. 6-8. for one cutteth a tree out of the forest (the work of the hands of the workman) with the axe : They deck it with with nails and with hammers, that it silver and with gold; they fasten it palm-tree, but speak not, Jer. x. 35. move not. They are upright as the nations? for to thee doth it appertain: Who would not fear thee, O king of forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

[blocks in formation]

But they are altogether brutish and foolish; the stock is a doctrine of vanities. Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing; they are all the work of cunning men. But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made >the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth' the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. Every man is brutish in his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, and the work of errors in the time of their visitation they shall perish, 7-15. Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? Art not thou he, O LORD our God ? therefore we will wait upon thee ; for thou hast made all these | things, xiv. 22. We know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one, 1 Cor. viii. 4.

heart was darkened: Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections, Rom. i. 21-26. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity: whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them, 28–32.

VER. 17.

a Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, band gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

a Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast. How excellent is thy loving-kindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings, Psal. xxxvi. 5-7. Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually, lii. 1. O LORD, how manifold
