Quest. What are "things eternal ?"

Ans. The happiness and well-being of a life to come. Quest. Is it difficult "so to pass through things temporal, that we finally lose not the things eternal ?" Ans. Very difficult; and we shall certainly miss our way, unless God "be our Ruler and our Guide."

46. FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

GRANT, O Lord, we beseech Thee, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by Thy governance, that Thy Church may joyfully serve Thee in all godly quietness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. What is meant by "the course of this world?" Ans. Human affairs in general; about which all Christians should entertain a kindly concern. "I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men." 1 Tim. ii. 1..

Quest. What would be the effect of " God's governance" submitted to in all affairs?

"The

Ans. That they would be "peaceably ordered." work of righteousness shall be peace." Isaiah xxxii. 17. Quest. "From whence come wars and fightings ?" Ans. From not being "ordered by the Divine governance." "Come they not hence, even from your lusts that war in your members?" James iv. 1.

Quest. When the world shall be thus "peaceably ordered," what advantage will it be to the Church?

Ans. She will be able "joyfully to serve God in all godly quietness;" our intercessions for all men having

this end. "That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty." 1 Tim. ii. 2.

47. SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

O GOD, Who hast prepared for them that love Thee such good things as pass man's understanding; pour into our hearts such love towards Thee, that we, loving Thee above all things, may obtain Thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. What "has God prepared for them that love Him?"

Ans. "Such good things as pass man's understanding." Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him." 1 Cor. ii. 9.

Quest. Are any "such good things" now given us pass man's understanding ?"

66 as

Ans. Yes; this is said by St. Paul of that " peace of God" which he invoked on the Christians at Philippi. Philip. iv. 7.

Quest. What is meant by saying of the peace of God in this life, that "it passeth all understanding ?"

Ans. That it is such as natural causes will not enable us to understand or account for. Much more the good things prepared hereafter for those that love God, must be beyond our present comprehension.

Quest. What effect is the assured hope of these good things intended to produce?

Ans. God designs by it to "pour into our hearts such

love towards Him, that we may love Him above all things."

Quest. If we do so, what will be the consequence ?

Ans. That we shall "obtain His promises, exceeding all that we can desire." "Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think." Ephes. iii. 20.

48. SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

LORD of all power and might, Who art the Author and Giver of all good things; graft in our hearts the love of Thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of Thy great mercy keep us in the same, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. What do you mean by addressing Almighty God as "Lord of all power and might?"

Ans. I mean to acknowledge His absolute authority, which nothing can by any means prevent or hinder. “In Thine hand is power and might." 1 Chron. xxix. 12.

Quest. How is God "the Author of all good things?" Ans. As the Creator. "God saw every thing that He had made, and behold it was very good." Gen. i. 31. Quest. In what way is He "the Giver of them ?"

Ans. Having created or called them into existence, He bestows them continually upon us. "Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things." Psalm ciii. 5.

Quest. What is grafting?

Ans. The insertion of a fruitful bud or branch in a stem that would not otherwise produce it.

Quest. Is "the love of God's Name" a natural production of" our hearts ?"

Ans. No; it requires to be " grafted in them ?"

Quest. How is this done?

Ans. Chiefly by the Sacraments; being also "nourished" and "increased" by every appointed means of grace. Quest. What do you mean by "true religion ?" Ans. Sound doctrine, real in its effects upon us. Quest. How may you expect to be "nourished with all goodness ?"

Ans. As a member of Christ by vital union with the Head. "From which all the body, having nourishment ministered, increaseth with the increase of God." Coloss. ii. 19.

Quest. What is meant by "goodness" here?

Ans. It means the same as grace.

Quest. What is meant by "keep us in the same?" Ans. "The sume" refers to " the love of God's Name," "the increase in true religion," and the "nourishment with all goodness," in which we pray God of His great mercy to keep us, through Jesus Christ our Lord,

49. EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

O GOD, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth; we humbly beseech Thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which be profitable for us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

F

Quest. What do you mean by "God's never-failing providence ?"

Ans. That care which He is pleased to take of all His

creatures.

Quest. Does His providence dispose of all affairs?

Ans. Yes; it" ordereth all things both in heaven and earth." "He doeth according to His will, in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth." Dan. iv. 35.

Quest. Is this care and government of Almighty God continually exercised ?

Ans. Yes; it is "never-failing."

Quest. What then should "we humbly beseech Him to put away from us ?"

Ans. "All hurtful things."

"No manner of hurt was

found upon him, because he believed in his God." Dan. vi. 23. "Who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?" 1 Pet. iii. 13.

Quest. What may we desire that God's "never-failing providence" would "give us?"

Ans. "Those things which be profitable for us." "Wisdom is profitable to direct." Eccl. x. 10. "Godliness is profitable unto all things." 1 Tim. iv. 8. "chasteneth" us "for our profit."

Heb. xii. 10.

"He"

Quest. Are not the good things of this present life included in this request?

Ans. Yes; so far as they shall not prove "hurtful things." "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" Mark viii. 36.

Quest. Does the providence of God thus "order all things" for the good of faithful Christians?

Ans. Yes; "All things work that love God." Rom. viii. 28.
