Ans. That they shall "receive the crown of everlasting glory." "When the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory, which fadeth not away." 1 Pet. v. 4.

78. SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE.

GRANT, O merciful God, that as Thine holy Apostle Saint James, leaving his father and all that he had, without delay was obedient unto the calling of Thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed Him; so we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, may be evermore ready to follow Thy holy commandments, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. Who was the father of this Apostle St. James? Ans. Zebedee. His mother's name also was Salome; and he was brother to the Apostle John.

Quest. How was he "obedient to the calling of Jesus Christ ?"

Ans. In " leaving his father and all that he had, without delay," to follow our blessed Saviour.

Quest. How is this example to be imitated by us?
Ans. "In forsaking all worldly and carnal affections."
Quest. What are "worldly affections ?"

Ans. The love of worldly pursuits and pleasures.

Quest. What are "carnal affections?"

Ans. "The carnal desires of the flesh;" about which we have already promised "that we will not follow nor be led by them." Baptismal Service.

Quest. After imitating St. James in what he forsook, how else is his example to govern us?

Ans. By "following the holy commandments" delivered

to us.

79. SAINT BARTHOLOMEW THE APOSTLE.

O ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, Who didst give to Thine Apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach Thy Word; grant, we beseech Thee, unto Thy Church, to love that Word which he believed, and both to preach and receive the same, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. Who was St. Bartholomew the Apostle?

Ans. He is believed to be the same as Nathanael, of whom our Saviour said, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile." John i. 47.

Quest. How was "grace given him truly to believe the Word ?"

Ans. By a remarkable proof of Christ's omniscience. "Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree I saw thee." John i. 48.

Quest. Did he also preach the Gospel?

Ans. Yes; he was one of the twelve commissioned and sent to do so in our Saviour's lifetime; Luke ix. 6. and of those who, being afterwards "scattered abroad, went every where preaching the word." Acts viii. 4.

Quest. What are we to learn from St. Bartholomew ?

Ans. "To love that Word which he believed." "Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel." John i. 49.

Quest. What is the duty of" the Church" in respect of it ?

Ans. "Both to preach and to receive the same."

80. SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, Who by Thy blessed Son didst call Matthew from the receipt of custom to be an Apostle and Evangelist; grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires, and inordinate love of riches, and to follow the same Thy Son Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Quest. From what was St. Matthew called away by Christ?

Ans. "From the receipt of custom," or tribute.

Quest. What were those persons who collected or received the Roman tribute?

Ans. Publicans.

Quest. To what office was St. Matthew called from the receipt of custom?

Ans. To be soon afterwards "an Apostle;" and about thirty years after the death of Christ, he became an Evangelist" also.

Quest. What do you mean by an Evangelist?

Ans. A writer of one of the Holy Gospels.

Quest. What example does St. Matthew afford us?
Ans. That of" forsaking all covetous desires, and inor-

dinate love of riches."

Ans. He forsook his worldly gains, to follow Christ.

81. SAINT MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS.

O EVERLASTING GOD, Who hast ordained and constituted the services of Angels and men in a wonderful order: mercifully grant, that as Thy holy Angels alway do Thee service in heaven; so by Thy appointment they may succour and defend us on earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. May we worship Angels?

Ans. "See thou do it not." Rev. xxii. 9.

82. SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST.

ALMIGHTY GOD, Who calledst Luke the Physician, whose praise is in the Gospel, to be an Evangelist, and Physician of the soul; may it please Thee, that by the wholesome medicines of the doctrine delivered by him, all the diseases of our souls may be healed, through the merits of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quest. How do we know that St. Luke was a Physician?

Ans. He is so styled by St. Paul; "Luke, the beloved Physician." Col. iv. 14.

Quest. By whom was St. Luke called to be an Evangelist?

Ans. By Almighty God, through the authority of St. Paul, with whom he travelled.

Quest. Do we read of his practising medicine when in company with the Apostle?

Ans. No. It is plain that his time was otherwise occupied, as "an Evangelist and Physician of the soul."

Quest. How did "the wholesome medicines of the doctrine delivered by him" benefit the Church?
