The Fifth Commandment.

LESSON XXIV.

MONDAY.-Ex. xx. 12.-Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

TUESDAY.-Lev. xix. 32.-Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the Lord.

WEDNESDAY.-Matt. xv. 4.-For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

THURSDAY.-Matt. xv. 5.-But ye say, Whosover shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

FRIDAY.-Matt. xv. 6.-And honor not his father and his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your traditions.

SATURDAY.-Rom. xiii. 1.-Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

SABBATH.-Rom. xiii. 7.—Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

MONDAY.-Gen. ii. 24.-Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh, TUESDAY.-Heb. xiii. 4.-Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed

undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. WEDNESDAY.-Eph. v. 28.—So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

THURSDAY.-Eph. v. 33.-Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

FRIDAY.-1 Cor. vii. 16.-For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? Or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

SATURDAY.-Titus ii. 4.-That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children.

SABBATH.-Prov. xv. 1.—A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Parental Duties.

LESSON XXVI.

MONDAY.-Gen. xvii. 18.-And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

TUESDAY.-Gen. xviii. 19.-For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. WEDNESDAY.-Isa. xlix. 15.-Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

THURSDAY.-Prov. xxix. 15.-The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. FRIDAY.—Eph. vi. 4.—And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. SATURDAY.-Heb. xi. 23.-By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. SABBATH.-2 Cor. xii. 14.-Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

MONDAY.-Mal. iv. 6.—And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

TUESDAY.-Lev. xix. 3.-Ye shall fear every man his mother and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. WEDNESDAY.-Eph. vi. 1.-Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right.

THURSDAY.—Eph. vi. 2.-Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.

FRIDAY.-Eph. vi. 3.—That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

SATURDAY.-Gen. xlvi. 29.-And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

SABBATH.-Prov. xxx. 17.—The eye that mocketh at his father, and despisest to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
