is sin, and the strength of sin is the law, but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ; wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. Thanks be to Thee, O Lord.

Then these prayers following, all devoutly kneeling, the Reader first saying, and the rest answering,

The Lord be with you,
And with thy spirit.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

MOST gracious God, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, we beseech Thee to fix our thoughts, our hopes, our desires on heaven and heavenly things. Teach us to despise the world, and to repent us deeply of our sins. Give us holy purposes of amendment, and strength to perform them faithfully. Enrich our understandings with an eternal

treasure of divine truths, that we may know Thy will. O Thou, Who workest in us to will and to do of Thy good pleasure, teach us to obey all Thy commandments, to believe all Thy revelations, and make us partakers of all Thy gracious promises, in Jesus Christ, our Lord and only Saviour. Amen. TEACH us, O blessed God, to watch over

all our ways, that we may not be overwhelmed by sudden temptations, or fall away from Thee through a careless and slothful spirit, nor return to sin and folly. Make us such as Thou wouldest have us to be; strengthen our faith, confirm our hope, and give us a daily increase of charity, and so help us, that it may become the great employment of our whole life to serve Thee, to root out all the accursed habits of sin, that in holiness of life, in humility, in chastity, and all the ornaments of grace, we may by patience, wait for the coming of the Lord Jesus.

Amen, even so come, Lord Jesus.

GUIDE us, O Lord our God, in all the

changes of this mortal life, that in all things which may befall us, we may have a

calm and peaceful spirit; that our souls may be wholly resigned to Thy divine will and pleasure; that we may never murmur at Thy gentle chastisements, or fatherly correction; that we may be meek and lowly of heart, in the midst of all our blessings and consolations; and so following the Lamb, whithersoever He goeth, may abide in Thy love for ever;

Hear us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name; O deliver us, and be merciful to our sins, for Thy Name's sake.

GIVE us grace, we beseech Thee, O Lord,

so to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom, ever to remember our last end, that we may not dare to sin against Thee. Let Thy holy angels keep watch around us to defend us from all dangers. Let Thy loving Spirit so guide us in the ways of peace and safety, that we may be saved from the hands of all our enemies, from a sinful life, and from despair in the hour of our death. Then, O blessed Jesu, let Thy mercies and the light of Thy countenance shine gloriously upon us, and
