Tyger! tyger! burning bright A POISON TREE I was angry with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I water'd it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright; And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veil'd the pole: In the morning glad I see My foe outstretch'd beneath the tree. ON ANOTHER'S SORROW Can I see another's woe, And not be in sorrow too? Can I see another's grief, And not seek for kind relief? Can I see a falling tear, And not feel my sorrow's share? Weep, nor be with sorrow fill'd? Can a mother sit and hear And can He who smiles on all And not sit beside the nest, And not sit both night and day, O no! never can it be! He doth give His joy to all: Think not thou canst sigh a sigh, Think not thou canst weep a tear, O! He gives to us His joy, That our grief He may destroy; WILLIAM WORDSWORTH THE RAINBOW My heart leaps up when I behold So was it when my life began; So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The Child is father of the Man; And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety. IN EARLY SPRING I heard a thousand blended notes, In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts To her fair works did Nature link The human soul that through me ran; And much it grieved my heart to think Through primrose tufts, in that green bower, The birds around me hopped and played, The budding twigs spread out their fan And I must think, do all I can, That there was pleasure there. If this belief from heaven be sent, ODE TO DUTY Stern Daughter of the Voice of God! When empty terrors overawe; From vain temptations dost set free; And calm'st the weary strife of frail humanity! There are who ask not if thine eye Be on them; who, in love and truth, Upon the genial sense of youth: Glad Hearts! without reproach or blot; Who do thy work, and know it not: Oh! if through confidence misplaced They fail, thy saving arms, dread Power! around them cast. |
