for the sin, and the sinners of the world. We shall go away with a strong realization of pardon, and help for the future. When we feel anxious, or useless, despondent, disappointed, lonely, what course is so wise ast to bring our load of care to the altar of our Lord, and there remember what He was on earth, how He sounded the depths of human trouble, how He still knows and feels for us in heaven, how by the means of this Sacrament, He gives to His people comfort, peace, and strength.

If we are in doubt and despondency, if the idea of death weighs heavily upon us, and the advice and help of men seem of no avail, surely the best course is to come in the appointed way to receive the help of God, who thus strengthens us for the conflicts and trials of life.*

And if our troubles proceed from the faults or afflictions of others, where can we

plead for them better than at the Holy Communion, where we pray for all who are troubled, in the prayer for the Church Militant, and in our private devotions.

Lastly, when we are delivered from troubles, where shall we find an occasion or a service so suitable as that of the Eucharist, when "with angels, and archangels, and all the company of Heaven," we, and all who are with us, laud and magnify His Holy Name. In all cases, then, of trouble there is no wiser course than devout and worthy attendance at the Holy Communion.

How to profit by Suffering.

THERE are two ways in which people meet trouble: either they rebel, which means loss of every kind, or they take it patiently and trustfully, with the result that the loss is turned into real and lasting blessing. All suffering comes from God in one way or another. If we break God's laws we must take the consequences. We must never think that suffering is a sort of revenge on God's part. That idea is utterly false and wrong. Pain of whatever kind has a message and a meaning for us.

How, then, shall we treat it? If If you are ill you have more time than usual for thinking about God's dealings with you. If you are in trouble you give less time to thinking

about the little things of ordinary life, and more to serious and solemn thoughts. Try, then, to find out the meaning of

your trouble. Perhaps there is some bad sin of which you have never repented, or there is some bad habit which is eating deeply into your character, and in danger of becoming incurable.

Look honestly into your life.

Or it may be that you are failing to do your duty-the work which God has given you to do because you are wilfully ignorant or careless, or lazy, or cowardly. You are on the brink of becoming like the "unprofitable servant" who was cast into outer darkness. Perhaps you are neglecting the Holy Communion-the House of Godyour prayers; or you are holding back from God that part of the money which He has given you which ought to be used in His service. If this is the case, the meaning of your trouble is plain. It is the merciful warning and reminder of God. Bodily pain often tells us there is something wrong with

us, and we go to the doctor before it is too late. Affliction warns the sinner and reminds him of his neglect, that he may be brought to repentance, forgiveness, and amendment, while there is opportunity. If you obtain these things, even the severest illness and pain will be a light price to pay.

But, suppose, that after careful thought you think "well, though I know I have done wrong, I cannot honestly see any special sin for which this is to be the punishment and remedy," then look at the matter in another light. "Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth." God wants you to live a more holy, religious life-nearer to Him-more like the perfect pattern of His Son; and perhaps He has sent you this affliction for this purpose. When ore is dug from the mine it has to be placed in the furnace before the pure, good metal, can be extracted. And so it is with men's souls. You will not often find a man or woman, who has had a life free
