36. Who is the Mediator of the covenant of grace ?

A. The only Mediator of the covenant of grace is the Lord Jefus Chrift r, who being the eternal Son of God, of one substance and equal with the Father, in the fulness of time became man t, and fo was and continues to be God and man, in two entire diftinct natures, and one person for

ever v.

p 1 Cor. xi. 23. For I have received of the Lord, that which alfo I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread: v. 24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. After the fame manner alfo he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the New Teftament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Q. 38. Why was it requifite that the Mediator fhould be God? 4. It was requifite that the Mediator fhould be God, that he might sustain and keep the human nature from finking under the infinite wrath of God, and the power of death z; gave worth and efficacy to his fufferings, obedience,

of whom as concerning the flesh Chrift came, who is over all, God bleffed for ever. Amen. Col. ii. 9. For in him dwelleth all the fulnefs of the Godhead bodily. Heb. vii. 24. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. v. 25. Wherefore he is able alfo to fave them to the uttermoft, that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make interceffion for them.

3. Heb. iv. 15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without fin. Heb. vii. 26. For fuch an high priest became us, who is holy, harmlefs, undefiled, feparate from finners, and made higher than the heavens.

Q. 39. Why

a Acts xx. 28, Take heed therefore unto yourfelves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghoft hath made you overfeers, to feed the church of God, which he has purchafed with his own blood. Heb. ix. 14. How much more fhall the blood of Chrift, who through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without fpot to God, purge your confcience from dead works to ferve the living God? Heb. vii. 25. Wherefore he is alfo able to fave them to the uttermoft, that come unto God by him, feeing he ever liveth to make interceffion for them. v. 26. For fuch an high prieft became us, who is holy, harmlefs, undefiled, feparate from finners, and made higher than the heavens; V. 27. Who necdeth not daily, as thofe high priefs, to offer up facrifice, firft for his own fins, and then for the peoples: for this he did once, when he offered up himfeif. v. 28. For the law maketh men high priefs which have infirmity; but the word of the oath which was fince the law, maketh the Son, who is confecrated for evermore.

Rom. iii. 24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift: v. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteoufnefs for the remiffion of fins that are paft, through the forbearance of God; v. 26. A. It was requifite that the Mediator, who was to reconcile God and man, fhould himself be both God and man, and this in one perfon, that the proper works of each nature might be accepted of God for us o, and relied
