It is needless to observe upon the extraordinary rarity of a complete copy of this edition on Large Paper. Of the very few that are so, there is not one, we believe, that has, like this, the addition of a second edition of the Memorabilia by Wells, 1705, in which the mis-paging is corrected at p. 130, and the Annotatiunculæ altered, and some few other changes. This volume renders the present copy UNIQUE.

Opera Græce et Latine ex recens. Edv. Wells cum Dissertat. et Notis Virorum Doctorum cura Thieme, cum præfatione Ernesti. Lipsiæ, 1763. 8vo. 4 vol. F. P.

"This is a translation from the original narrative of Pizarro's conquest of Peru, as it was sent to Charles V. by Fr. Xeres, secretary to Pizarro; and is said to have

been first printed in Spanish at Seville in 1535, reprinted in Salamanca in 1547. The original Seville edition in Spanish 1535 was unknown to Antonio, and I find no other trace of it except in the Italian preface. I presume, therefore, this Italian translation to be prior in date and in authority to any other, as it was printed only six months after the events which it records." MS. note.

In this copy is a long explanatory note by Mr. Panizzi, who by his interpretation of the three first lines at the commencement, proves that this work was dedicated to Giovanni Mocenico, who was Doge of Venice from 1478 to 1485. It was probably printed about the latter period.
