Mat. Sutcliffe, a celebrated Divine who published twenty or thirty Tracts of controversial theology, wrote this elaborate treatise on Armies and on War, with a suitable dedication to the famous Earl of Essex. He died in 1629.

It was written at Quiba in 1725 at Dr. Sheridan's. He tells Pope in a letter of 29th Septr. 1725, that he has prepared them for the press; he went to England in 1726, where he printed it. In Gay's letter of Novr. 1726, he says it was published 10 Novr. 1726, vol. XII. p. 213.

Mr. Douce, in his Illustrations of Shakspeare, first pointed out this volume to the notice of the public: at p. 400 is the story "Of a Jew who would for his debt have a pound of the flesh of a Christian."
