Collation. A-H. in fours. Thirty-two leaves. The Title is followed by the Poem on A 2, which concludes on the recto of F. 4, p. 45. P. 46 commences with "Other Sonnets of variable verse," the tenth and last finishing on H. 4, recto, p. 61.

This extremely rare first edition had belonged to A. Wood whose autograph has been studiously blotted from the bottom of the Title-Page, the remaining four MS. lines on it are in his hand-writing.

Syr P. S. His Astrophel and Stella. Wherein the excellence of sweete Poesie is concluded. To the end of which are added, sundry other rare Sonnets of diuers Noblemen and Gentlemen. London, for Thomas Newman, 1591. 4to. G. M.

A-L. in fours. Forty-four leaves.

"I had already purchased (the preceding article) a copy with the same Title, printer, and date, which was considered as so far unique that no other was known. The present Copy occurred in Caldecott's Sale, and finding it altogether different from the other in almost every page I purchased it likewise. Besides the great differences of the Text, this copy has the Dedication to 'Ma. Frauncis Flower,' the Preface by T. Nash and 27 sonnets by Daniel, followed by five Cantos or Songs with signature Content' and two concluding Sonnets one marked E. O.

Lowndes's Description is incorrect, the total number of Sonnets and Songs is not 119 as he states but 160.

I know of no other copy of either of these two editions by Newman.

See Collier's Bridgewater House Catalogue, pp. 80-82, where Daniel's Sonnets are referred to." MS. note.

The Defence of Poesy. To which are prefixed, several copies of verses by Edward, Lord Thurlow. London, W. Bulmer, 1811. 4to.
