REFRANES.

There are two earlier editions fol. 1555. (see under Nuñez, page 499) and 12mo. 1578. but neither of them contain the Filosofia del Mal Lara, and Cartas de Garay which are added in this edition. The more modern edition of Madrid, 1804, is said to have many additions but many passages of the prior editions are omitted.

REGES TRES COLONIÆ. Trium Regum Historia. (In fine.) Liber de gestis ac trina beatissimorum trium regum translacione qui gentium primicie et exemplar salutis omnium fuerunt christianorum per me Johannem Guldenschaff de Maguncia, anno a nativitate Christi, MCCCCLXXVII. fideli exaracione impressus finit feliciter. Fol. B. M.

Collation. Forty-eight leaves, then thirteen leaves containing "Sermones bini Alberti Magni et Augustini."

This appears to be the earliest account printed of the Three Kings of Cologne. It is rare and appears to be quoted both in Panzer and in Denis Supp. from the Analecta of Freytag who gives the most accu

rate account of it.

Fol. B. M.

This most beautiful copy was purchased at Mr. Inglis's sale. Between sheets h. & i., is half a leaf, evidently printed by Caxton, inserted to supply a deficiency in the Text.

The extraordinary rarity of this book is sufficiently described by Dibdin in Bibl. Spenc. IV. 244.

Only two other copies are known one in the King's Library (Br. Mus.) and the other in Lord Spencer's.

Dibdin in his collation is wrong in Bib. Spencer: he does not mention that sign. k. has only 6 leaves. From his account it does not appear that Lord Spencer's copy has the curious half leaf above mentioned.

Fausto da Longiano in his Commentary, and Baruffaldi in his life of Ariosto impute to him that he had taken his story from this book. Panizzi disproves this in his edition of Ariosto, but says that Espeio de Cavallerias is so rare that he despaired of finding it till Mr. Heber lent him this copy, perhaps the only one in England. Brunet, N. R. vol. I. p. 488. notices the edi

tions of this work but singularly enough says "Antonio attribue l'Espejo a Pedro de Reynosa, qui pourtant ne s'y nomme pas." On the Title Page and in the Privilege of the first part and at the commencement of the third he is expressly named. The first part of the present copy appears to be made up with the title of the edition of 1586. and the body of the work

of the edition of 1551. The third part has

no title.

In Cervantes's Catalogue of Don Quixote's library, Book I. Cap. VI., Cervantes certainly appears to think that Ariosto did profit from this Espejo de Cavallerias which is fully disproved by the Royal Privilege which says of it "traduzido de lengua Toscana en nuestro Castellano por Pedro de Reynosa."
