FIRST EDITION. Concerning the great rarity of this Editio Princeps of Quintilian, there is no difference of opinion, though concerning the printer there has been much literary controversy. Reviczky gives no opinion. The references may be seen in Bibl. Spencer. vol. II. p. 305. with the reasons for ascribing it, as Audiffredi does, to the press of Philip de Lignamine. A second edition of Quintilian was printed in the same year 1470 by Sweynheym and Pannartz.

RABUTIN, FRANÇOIS DE. Commentaires sur le faict des dernieres Guerres en la Gaule Belgique, entre Henry Second, Roy de France, et Charles cinquieme Empereur. Paris, par Michel de Vascosan, 1555. 4to.

The author who was an eye witness of these wars, is highly praised by Meuselius VII. ii. p. 225. This is the first edition; it was continued by the author in part, and with a subsequent addition made by his friend V. de Bruez, was reprinted in 8vo. Paris, 1574.

RACINE, JEAN.

Impresse diligenter a Johanne Trechsel, alemanno : artisque impressorie magistro, 1496. Fol. Twenty-eight leaves in double columns. B. M.

"These two works printed by Trechsel are extremely uncommon. Archbishop Fitz Ralph born at Dundalke and educated at Oxford, by the favour of Edward III. became Chancellor of Oxford in 1333 and Archbishop of Armagh in 1347. He was

preceptor to Wiclif and is said to have assisted in his Translation of the Scriptures.

In this curious work of his controversy with the Mendicant Orders of England he states himself to have seen in his youth 30.000 students at Oxford though he lived to see that number reduced to 6000. This

anecdote is quoted by Henry. I have not found any account of Chonnoe. See Harris's Ware, III. p. 84. and Bale Scriptores, p. 459. where he mentions this controversy with Archbishop Fitz Ralph." MS. note.

Richardi Archiepiscopi Armachani Hyberniæ Primatis Defensorium curatorum, adversus eos, qui Privilegiatos se dicunt, habitum Avenione in Consistorio coram D. Papa Innocentio VI. et D. D. Accessit et brevis præfatio apologetica. Paris. 1633. 8vo.

The present is the best edition of this curious work, having a Præfatio and an addition of Seventy-four pages, which are in no former edition.

This Tract is very rare as may be seen in the Life of Ralegh by Oldys, prefixed to the fol. Ed. of Ralegh's Hist. of the World, 1736. p. cc. where he says he borrowed this scarce tract from Sir Hans Sloane. See also Brydges's Cens. Lit. IV. 137. where he calls this, a very uncommon book.
