"FIRST EDITION. The priority of this edition is sufficiently ascertained; but it is remarkable that except this copy, not one has been found perfect. The other five copies known, viz. that in the Royal

Library at Paris (wanting 2 leaves.)—that in Lord Spencer's-that of Count D'Elciof Lord Pembroke and of our Royal Library, are every one of them more or less defective. The present copy having been carefully collated is perfect and correct. It was purchased from the Collection of the Canon Devoti and perfected by Mr. Payne. There is a remarkable error of the press which we believe has been hitherto unnoticed; that the "De Medicamine Faciei" is printed immediately after the "Philo. mena" but without any title and the "De Nuce" which ends the 2nd. vol. has the title belonging to the Medicamine instead

"This copy of the rare second edition of Ovid is differently arranged in two volumes from that mentioned in Bibl. Spencer. II. 195, in 3 vol. and from Audiffredi's

in 2 vols. It is quite perfect, and is thus arranged.

Vol. I. Metamorphoseos, libri XV. Fastorum libri VI.

Vol. II. Elegia. Amorum libri III. Artis Amandi libri III. Pulex. De Remedio Amoris libri II. Consolatio ad Liviam. Heroides. Nux. Medicata facies. In Ibin. De Tristibus libri V. De Ponto, lib. IV. Sappho Phaoni ends the volume. This makes the fifteenth Epistle of the Heroides in the more modern editions of Ovid; why it appears here detached and with so decisive a Finit in large letters, it is not easy to explain. Maittaire, Audiffredi, Laire and Reviczky have all of them dwelt upon the rarity of this edition, supposed to be from a different MS. from Azo

guidi's of 1471." MS. note.

Opera Omnia. Bononiæ, per me Baldaserem de Azzoguidis, MCCCCLXXX. Fol. 3 vol. R. M.

This second Edition of the Ovid of Az

zoguidi, still more rare than the rare first,

has the addition of the Consolatio ad Liviam, not in the edition of 1471. The only two copies in addition to the present in England are that noticed in Askew's Catalogue, and that of the Bodleian. This latter copy was purchased out of the library of the learned Dr. Edward Barnard, about 1698, when the books selected for the Bodleian were prized by Humfrey Wanley. It stands in Wanley's MS. list thus,

Ovidius edit. Bonon. 1480, Charta magna 00..04..00.

In our copy of Askew's Catalogue with prices and some names in MS. the Azzoguidi Ovid of 1480 is put down to the name of Aubery, and sold for £10 15s. The present copy is in the most beautiful condition, with illuminated capitals. The following is an accurate collation of this most valuable book. The signatures are quite unaccountably confused; the error of misplacing by the printer the title of Medicamine and placing it over De Nuce has been copied verbatim from the same error in the press in the edition of 1471. Opus impressum Bononiæ, per me Baldaserem de Azzoguidis civē Bononiensem. Anno incarnationis MCCCCLXXX.

Opera Omnia, cum Epistola Boni Accursii Pisani. Impressum Venetiis, per Bernardinum de Novaria, MCCCCLXXXVI. Die xiii Januarii. Fol. containing 372 leaves, the 66th blank. R. M.

Laire, Index II. 100, "Editio elegans et completa." Panzer III. 232, describes the Epistola Boni Accursii Pisani as bebegins the second, and seems by the nuginning the first volume; in this copy it merals to be more properly placed there. By Fossi's account the second volume was printed before the first, which would naturally account for the Epistola being found there. Fossi, II. 264. "This edition is so scarce that Maittaire never saw a copy of it." Harleian Cat. III. No. 826.
