una prefazione a questi soli dodici esemplari premessa dall' editore Bartolommeo Gamba."

- Novelle Scelte Rarissime, stampate a spese di XL. Amatori. Londra, 1814. 12mo. 2 vol. G. M. PRINTED UPON VELLUM.

NOVUS ORBIS. Novus Orbis regionum ac insularum veteribus incognitarum, una cum tabula cosmographica, et aliquot aliis consimilis argumenti libellis. (Cum præfatione Simonis Grynæi.) Basileæ, apud Jo. Hervagium, 1532. Fol.

"This first edition of the Novus Orbis is very desirable, and very difficult to find. The Title Page announces a Map, with a description of the Map by Munster, but no map has as far as I can learn, ever been seen

in this edition. Neither do Camus, Meuselius, Maittaire, Panzer, or any of the Bibliographical books appear to have noticed in this and in the subsequent editions the constant deficiency of the map."

I have a copy of the second Edition (printed at Paris in the same year, 1532, but six months after this) with the original map with the date of 1531, and I have in the Basil Edition of 1555, a different map, apparently also made for that edition."

MS. note.

To this fine copy is added the first Latin Edition of the Letters of Cortez, 1524.

Editio secunda. Parisiis, apud Antonium Augurellum, impensis Jo. Parvi et Galeoti a Prato, 1532. Fol.

G. M.

See note to the preceding article. The Map is thus addressed to the reader, "Orontius. F. Delph. ad lectorem."

"Offerimus tibi, candide lector, universam orbis terrarum descriptionem, juxta recentium Geographorum ac Hydrographorum mentem, seruatatum Æquatoris, tum parallelorum ad eas quæ ex centris proportione, gemina cordis humani formula in plano co-extensam: quarum læua borealem, dextra vero Australem Mundi partem complectitur. Tu igitur munusculum hoc liberaliter excipito: habetoque gratias Christiano Wechelo, cujus fauore et impensis hæc tibi communicavimus. Vale, 1531. Mense Julio."

Of this strange composition there does not appear any notice. It is a romance singularly written in a language made up of Spanish and Italian.

This original Spanish Edition is of the greatest rarity. The Relacion is translated and inserted in the third volume of Ramusio, p. 310, but the Commentarios are omitted. The author was the grandson of Peter de Vera, who discovered the Canary Islands; he describes himself as one of the only four survivors of the expedi tion of Navaez to Florida in 1527. He went governor to Rio de la Plata in 1540. N. Antonio, I. 61. Meuselius, VI. i. 367.
