but his son is called Edward Clinton in one or two places, which fixes the person to have been Henry, the second Earl of Lincoln: what is still more curious, is that there is no account of this Embassy at all noticed in the Peerage of this Family."

In one Volume. MONTEMAYOR. Los siete libros de la Diana de Jorge de Montemayor, dirigidos al muy Illustre señor don Joan Castella de Vilanova, senor de las baronias de Bicorb, y Quesa. Impresso en Valencia. S. a. 4to. B. M.

First Edition, extremely rare, and unknown to all the Bibliographers. The edition of the Diana, cited by all authors

as the first, is dated 1562, and contains an Elegy on his death by Francisco Marcos Dorantes, not in this, which is dedicated by Montemayor himself to Don Juan Castella de Vilanova, Lord of the Baronies of Bicorb and Quesa, in the province of Va

lencia, whom, in some verses after the dedication, he calls his Mæcenas. Montemayor was killed in Piedmont in February, 1561. This edition therefore is as early as 1560, or earlier. Lope de Vega in his Laurel de Apolo, says, that Montemayor's Piramo was "Hurtado o traducido del Marino."

Marino was not born until eight years after the death of Montemayor! Conde, Cat. No. 655. "I possess two other editions later than the present but earlier than all mentioned by the Bibliographers, both dated, 1561, 16mo, one printed at Barcelona, the other at Antwerp; they correspond with the present in containing the Author's dedication to his patron, Don Juan de Castilla de Vilanova, and have at the end the poetical History of Alcida and Sylvano, which is not in this." Note by Mr. Heber.
