Moule Bibl. Herald. p. 17, quotes Nisbet for saying that this work was taken by Leigh almost verbatim from Caxton's translation of a French MS. from which Ferne also borrowed largely. Leigh first printed this in 1562 and died the following year.

The Author, a Scotch Divine, born 1568, died 1644, for writing this book was twice publickly whipped and pilloried, his ears cut off, his nose slit, his cheeks branded with S. S. (Sower of Sedition) and eleven

years imprisoned in the Fleet Prison! he

wrote also" The looking-glass of the Holy War."

This satirical Poem upon Lord Leicester, printed the same year with Leicester's Commonwealth, is sometimes found bound up with it, and has been by some attributed to the same author, Parsons the Jesuit.

These original editions of Leo Xth's Bull against Luther and his answer to it, are of very rare occurrence.

These four tracts are not to be found without great difficulty united: the first of them with the Commentary of Ulrichus Hutten is of the greatest rarity.

This curious historical tract is of great rarity. Holinshed tells us that Lionel Bishop of Concordia was sent into England in 1489-90 to make peace between Henry VII. and Charles King of France, as ambassador from Pope Alexander VI. Henry opposed the marriage of Charles with the Duchess of Britanny-but the embassy failed and Charles made good his marriage. See also Bacon's Henry VII.

Gough in his Topogr. Brit. II. 583, says that he has seen but two copies with the map; one in the Advocates' Library, and the other in Mr. Paton's, he adds that Bp. Lesley's map of Scotland, ranks as the first

printed one. A spurious edition of this

book was afterwards printed at Edinburgh with the false title of " Romæ."
