Prov. xxix. 23. A man's pride fhall bring him low; but honour fhall uphold the humble in fpirit.

Prov. xvi. 19. Better is it to be of an humble fpirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Prov. xxii. 4. By humility, and the fear of the LORD, are riches, honour, and life.

Matt. xxii. 12. Whofoever fhall exalt himself, shall be abafed; and he that fhall humble himself, shall be exalted, Luke xviii. 14.

Matt. xviii. 4. Whofoever fhall humble himself as this little child, the fame is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

To the Contrite and
Mourners.

Ff. xxxiv. 16. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and faveth such as be of a contrite fpirit.

P. li. 17. The facrifices of GOD are a broken fpirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O GOD, thou wilt not defpife.

Pf. cxlvii. 3. He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Eccl. vii. 3. Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the fadness of the countenance, the heart is made better.

I. lvii. 15. Thus faith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is HOLY, I dwell in the high and holy place: with him also that is of a contrite and humble fpirit; to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite

ones.

If. lvi. 2. To this man will I look, even to him that is of a poor and contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

Matt. v. 3. Bleffed are the poor in fpirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Ver. 4. Bleffed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

II. To them that SUFFER for RIGHTEOUSNESS' Sake.

Matt. v. 10. Blessed are they which are perfecuted for righteousness fake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Ver. 11. Bleffed are ye when men fhall revile you, and perfecute you, and fhall fay all manner of evil againft you falfely, for my fake.

Ver. 12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For fo perfecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Matt. x. 39. He that findeth his life, fhall lofe it and he that lofeth his life for my fake, fhall find it.

Matt. xix. 21. Every one that hath forfaken houfes, or brethren, or fifters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's fake, fhall receive an hundred-fold, and fhall inherit everlasting life.

2 Cor. iv. 9. Perfecuted, but not forfaken. 2 Tim. ii. 12. If we fuffer, we shall also reign with

him.

Rom. viii. 17. If fo be that we fuffer with him, that we may be alfo glorified together.

Ver. 35. Who fhall feperate us from the love of Chrift? Shall tribulation, or diftrefs, or perfecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Ver. 36. (As it is written, For thy fake we are killed all the day long, we are accounted as fheep for the flaughter.).

Ver. 37. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us.

Heb. x. 34. For he had compaffion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the fpoiling of your goods,

knowing in yourselves, that ye have a better and an enduring fubftance.

Ver. 35. Caft not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompenfe of reward.

1 Pet. iii. 14. If ye suffer for righteousness' fake, happy are ye And be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

Ver. 17. For it is better, if the will of GOD be fo, that ye fuffer for well-doing, than for evil-doing.

1 Pet. iv. 12. Beloved, think it not ftrange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as tho fome ftrange thing happened unto you ;

Ver. 13. But rejoice, inafmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that when his glory fhall be revealed, ye may be glad alfo with exceeding joy.

Ver. 14. If ye be reproached for the name of Chrift, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of GOD refteth upon you: On their part he is evil fpoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

To them that are excommmunicated unjustly.

Ifa. lxvi. 5. Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that caft you out for my name's fake, faid, Let the LORD be glorified: But he fhall appear to your joy, and they fhall be afhamed.

Luke vi. 22. Bleffed are ye, when men fhall hate you, and when they fhall feparate you from their company, and fhall reproach you, and caft out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's fake.

Ver. 23. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy, for behold your reward is great in heaven.

III. To PATIENCE and SUBMISSION.

Lam. iii. 26. It is good that a man fhould both hope, and quietly wait for the falvation of the LORD.

Ver. 27. It is good for man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

Ver. 28. He fitteth alone and keepeth filence, because he hath borne it upon him.

Ver. 29. He putteth his mouth in the dust, if fo be there may be hope.

Ver. 31. For the LORD will not caft off forever. Heb. x. 35. Caft not away your confidence, which hath great recompenfe of reward.

Ver. 36. For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of GOD, ye might receive the promise.

Ver. 37. For yet a little while, and he that fhall come will come, and will not tarry.

Heb. vi. 12. That'ye be not flothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Fam. i. 2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

Ver. 3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

Ver. 4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Ver. 12. Bleffed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he fhall receive the crown of life, which the LORD hath promised to them that love him.

Rom. v. 3. We glory in tribulation, knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

Ver. 4. And patience, experience; and experience, hope.

Prov. x. 28. The hope of the righteous fhall be gladness.

1 Pet. v. 6. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of GOD, that ye may be exalted in due time. James iv. 10. Humble yourfelves in the fight of the LORD, and he fhall lift you up.

James v. 7. Be patient, brethren, unto the coming of the LORD. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and the latter rain.

Ver. 8. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts : For the coming of the LORD draweth nigh.

Ver. II. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the LORD, that the LORD is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

1 Pet. ii. 20. If when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with GOD.

IV. To PERSEVERANCE.

Matt. x. 22.

He that endureth to the end shall be

faved, chap. xxiv. 13.

John viii. 31. If ye continue in my word, then are ye my difciples indeed.

Ver. 32. And ye fhall know the truth, and the truth fhall make you free.

John xv. 7. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye fhall afk what ye will, and it fhall be done unto you.

1 Cor. xv. 58. My beloved brethren, Be ye ftedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the LORD.

Gal. vi. 9. Let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due feafon we fhall reap, if we faint not.

Heb. iii. 14. We are made partakers of Chrift, if we hold the beginning of our confidence ftedfast unto

the end.
