SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG'S
IMPORTATIONS.

The Ceramic Art-translated from the French of Jacquemart, and profusely illustrated with designs, over which every connoisseur will linger lovingly-is one of the most superb of the Holiday Books imported by Messrs. SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG the present season. The increasing number who are yielding to the delightful fascinations of collecting rare specimens of porcelain and of pottery will welcome this excellent guide warmly. In his London Letter, Mr. Welford describes the work so fully that it is unnecessary to go into details regarding it here. Beautiful Pictures by British Artists includes the best specimens of Turner, Wilkie, Constable, Landseer, Gilbert, &c., &c., all engraved in the highest style of art. The volume is one of these ornaments to the centre-table which never loses its attractiveness.

of the Reign of Charles II., engraved from the originals, in the Royal Gallery at Windsor, which were painted by Sir Peter Lely. The Memoirs annexed are by Mrs. Jameson, author of "Legends of the Madonna," and have something more than merely transient interest and value.

The Children of the Olden Time is a monograph upon a most attractive subject; and that it is done in an entertaining way, is antecedently evident, from the fact that Mrs. Mackarness, who wrote "A Trap to Catch Sunbeams," is the author.

To enumerate all the attractions which Messrs. SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG have brought together for the Holiday season, would compel us to transfer to these columns the forty-eight pages of the Catalogue they have just issued. We need only say that this Catalogue embraces one hundred works, specially illustrated with inserted engravings; works of reference, voyages and travels; books upon architecture, history, humor, etc., etc.; making such a collection as is rarely seen together in this country.

SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG CO.'S CHRISTMAS
BOOKS.

No special publication in the gift-book line has been made this year by Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG Co., but their list contains a number of works which are sure to be eagerly sought after as particularly adapted to the season. Jules Verne is represented by his books, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and a Journey From the Earth to the Moon in 97 hours, 20 minutes, with a Trip Round It. Taking the limits of these voyages-from the Centre of the Earth to the Moon-they may be said to cover all of space that we are likely to know anything about for some time to come. The thrilling stories of this pioneer in these regions, are all the rage" now, with younger readers, and we imagine that older ones, as well, take a furtive glimpse into these pages "just to see what all this nonsense is about." A glance at the wonderfully graphic illustrations is sure to lead to an examination of the text, and then nothing can be done until a perusal of the books has enabled one to decide how much truth and how much fiction there is in them.

My Kalulu, by Henry M. Stanley, the discov erer of Livingstone, brings into a form which youunger readers can master, the mysteries of the interior of Africa. The manner of life there, the peculiarities of the native tribes, the horrors

Somewhat in the same line is Court Deauties of the slave trade, are worked up into a story

of thrilling adventure, every point of which, if it is not absolutely fact, may have been so. Nowhere are the limits of probability transgressed. With its striking illustrations and characteristic binding, the volume is one of the most attractive which has been issued this season.

Of the other publications of the fall, that admirable story Hans Brinker, A Very Young Couple, by the author of Mrs. Jerningham's Journal, and Saxe Holm's Stories, are all most attractive books and in every way suitable as gifts. Those who prefer the superbly illustrated volumes of poetry which have been so much in vogue during the past years, will find new supplies of Garnered Sheaves (the Red Line Edition of Dr. Holland's complete poetical, works), Kathrina and Bitter Sweet, in separate volumes, or those artistic books, Songs of the Heart, of Home, of Nature, and of Life, from which to draw.

Bury Palliser, published in London by Sampson Low, and imported by SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG. In one splendidly printed, sumptuously bound, and exquisitely illustrated volume of six hundred and twenty-seven pages, is given a descriptive and philosophical study of the pottery of all ages and all nations. There are two hundred woodcuts by H. Catenacci and Jules Jacquemart, twelve engravings in aqua. fortis, or etchings, by Jules Jacquemart; and one thousand marks and monograms. The etchings are peculiarly delicate in texture and rich in effect; indeed, in the matter of illustrations, there seems to be nothing more to be desired.

The method of treatment is rather "to lay before the reader the moral causes and historic influences which have modified the ideas and styles of the artists, than the scientific improvements to which may be attributed, in part, the changes introduced in Ceramic manufacture." After reading such a book as this, we may well be inclined to say that 'the history of the Ceramic Art is the history of mankind."

THE SPEAKER'S COMMENTARY ON

EXODUS.

Standard books in fine bindings, such as Hodge's Systematic Theology, Lange's Speaker's Commentaries, or the works of Drs. Shedd, Bushnell, Schaff, and others, cannot be surpassed in their adaptation to the needs of clergymen, while Froude's History of England, Max Muller's works, Stanley's Jewish and Eastern Churches, etc., etc., will be a valuable addition to any library of miscellaneous literature. There is no present so generally acceptable as a good book, and the better the book, the longer it will be a source of pleasure to the one who may receive it. Bearing this in mind, there are few lists of American publishers from which selec-volume will also comprise an exceedingly valua tions may be made to such advantage as from that which we have here hastily summarized.

A SPLENDID WORK ON CERAMIC ART. CERTAINLY never in this country has the Ceramic Art had so many enthusiastic admirers and students as it boasts to-day. But few even of our most cultivated people—unless they are exceptionally familiar with the subject. are aware of the number of beautiful and costly collections of the potter's art, that may be found in private houses in New York and elsewhere. The collection of specimen pieces of crockery seems to be especially in vogue among women. Certainly, there is much pleasure to be gained in the study, which, if conscientiously pursued, may, in itself, amount to "a liberal education."

The latest, and one of the most important of all the works upon this fascinating theme, is the History of the Ceramic Art, by Albert Jac- | quemart, translated from the French, by Mrs.

TEACHERS and Sunday-Schools engaged in studying the International Uniform Series of Lessons will be gratified at the announcement, that the section of the "Speaker's Commentary" which covers Exodus is to be issued in a separate volume, by Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co., at the low price of $1.50 per copy. The

ble essay "On the Bearing of Egyptian History on the Pentateuch;" a summary view, in tabular form, of the Transactions attested by Egyptian Monuments, and of their Connection with Hebrew History;" a sketch map of the part of Palestine through which the Israelites must have passed on their way to Mount Sinai; a map of the group of Mount Sinai itself-both of these from the Ordnance Survey, made under the direction of the British Government in 1868 and 1869; and several illustrations of importance to the elucidation of the text, particularly as regards the structure of the Tabernacle, etc. These features, with the clear and compact comments on the text, which embrace all the results of the most recent important explorations, tho roughly adapt this work to the widest popular use in connection with that part of the Scrip. tures soon to pass under revisw, and make it in all ponits equal, and in many respects manifestly superior, to any other commentary now in the

market. It cannot fail to secure at once a still wider circulation than that which the section of the same work on Genesis enjoyed, when that book of the Old Testament was under study.

STANDARD AND CHRISTMAS BOOKS. A GENERAL assortment of Standard American publications, and of the gift-books of the present season, may be found upon the shelves of Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co., and SCRIBNER, WELFORD & ARMSTRONG. All intending to purchase are invited to inspect their stock before calling elsewhere.

ST. NICHOLAS FOR JANUARY, THIS is the holiday number of Scribner's new magazine for young people, and it comes loaded, not only with its own store of good things for the Christmas time, but with the best of what had been promised to the readers of Our Young Folks for the last-named magazine has been bought by Scribner & Co., and is now merged in ST. NICHOLAS. But although Our Young Folks disappears from the field of juvenile literature, the boys and girls will lose nothing, for its best writers will contribute to the magazine.

Mr. Trowbridge, the editor of the late Young Folks, has transferred his story, "Fast Friends," announced for his magazine, to ST. NICHOLAS, which thus receives a most valuable addition to its corps of contributors, for few writers enjoy so high a reputation in juvenile literature as Mr. Trowbridge. The first chapter of his story appears in this holiday number of ST. NICHOLAS, which shows a great increase in size, while the quality of its contents is superior to that of the earlier numbers, and that is saying a great deal. It is unusually rich in stories. There is a New York Christmas story, called "Pete," by Mrs. L. G. Morse, which is most admirably told. Then there is a German Christmas story, by Mary Lockwood, and a fairy Christmas story, "The Elves' Gift," by Arthur Crosby. Among the other stories is, The Boy Who Worked," by Roswell Smith, one of the Publishers, in which the career is shown of a poor boy who worked his way up to the position of a gentleA Garret Adventure," a bright story by Mrs. M. M. Dodge; and "The Story of the Jolly Harper Man," by H. Butterworth, illustrated by six jolly pictures by Stephens. Besides all these, there are no less than three serials running "What Might Have Been Expected," by Frank R. Stockton, a story for boys, which was commenced in the first number, and

which contains this month, besides a watery adventure, a description of a decidedly curious Christmas tree. Then there is the first instalment of a serial for girl's, "Nimpo's Troubles," by Olive Thorne, so well known as a writer for young folks. The opening chapters indicate that this will be one of her very best stories. And then comes Trowbridge's "Fast Friends," which opens with some exceedingly real character-pictures of country life in the Northern States, and has, besides, some lively stories of boys' adventures on canal boats. There are also Christmas articles by Donald G. Mitchell and John Hay; poems by William Cullen Bryant, Lucy Larcom and Mary Mapes Dodge; descriptions of Christmas toys and games; sprightly talk from Jack-in-the-Pulpit; a lively French story for translation; and an exceedingly wellwritten account of the poor little princes who are buried in the Tower of London.

The engravings, of which there is a generous display-about forty in all-are of that high noted as a magazine of art. order which has already made ST. NICHOLAS

SCRIBNER FOR JANUARY.

THE January number of SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY has among its contributors Bret Harte, Gail Hamilton, Charles Dudley Warner, John G. Saxe, Colonel T. W. Higginson, George MacH. Stoddard, H. H., Frank R. Stockton, Adeline Donald, James Anthony Froude, John Hay, R. Trafton, Edward King, Rebecca Harding Davis, and Albert Rhodes. Bret Harte and Gail Hamilton contribute stories, Harte's being entitled "A Monte Flat Pastoral; How Old Man Plunkett went Home." George MacDonald contributes a remarkable poem, suggested by a picture by Thomas Moran, entitled, "The Haunted House." There are poems, also, by Stoddard, Hay, Saxe, J. C. R. Dorr, H. H., and a nameless author who rhymes of "The Olden Time." Edward King, the writer, and Champney, the artist, give us (in the Great South Series), Glimpses of Texas, and especially of San of an English Abbey" is completed. Warner Froude's study of the prints his "Thoughts Suggested by Mr. Froude's Progress." Higginson's sketch of Warner is illustrated by a portrait. Rhodes tells us about Stockton freely speech-making in Congress. adapts for us Verne's story of "A Trip to the Moon." Miss Trafton and Mrs. Davis continue their serials, Katherine Earle," and "Earthen Pitchers."
