THE BRIC-A-BRAC SERIES. Personal reminiscences of famous poets and novelists, wits and humorists, artists. actors, musicians and the like,

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

Under the general title of "The Bric-a-Brac Series," Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co. are issuing unique series of books, to be published at intervals, in which there shall be collected from the numerous biographies, autobiographies and memoirs that have lately appeared, all the reminiscences worth preservation of the men and women who have done so much to make this century one of the most brilliant in the annals of English Literature. Each volume will be complete in itself, and will contain a condensation of one or more of these biographies. A careful index will furnish a ready guide to the contents of the different volumes, in which, under the capable editorship of Mr. R. H. STODDARD, it may safely be asserted there will be brought together a fund of choice and fresh anecdote and gossip, enough not only to justify the general title of the series, but the line of Marlowe which has been selected as its motto, "Infinite riches in a little room."

"The first volume of this bright, promising series-which, by the by, is got up, externally, in a very odd brick-a-brac '-ish style-is devoted to three men whose recollections are full of just the titbits of events and personal description which the mass of readers are likely to relish. . . . . The less interesting parts of the authors to American readers are dispensed with; the pith of each book is carefully extracted and arranged in tempting form. Mr. Stoddard, moreover, gives us, in a preface, biographies flavored with anecdote, and in a lively style in harmony with the design of the volume, of the three authors whose best things are further on laid before the reader. No more refreshing volume could be carried into the country or to the sea-shore, to fill in the niches of time which intervene between the pleasure of the Summer holidays."
