quote the contents of the volume, which run as follows: "On some traits of the Bible which seem at variance with certain principles and tendencies of Human Nature.-Auxiliary arguments, drawn from certain traits of the New Testament as contrasted with what might be expected from the antecedents of the writers.—Arguments derived from (1) coincidences" between certain statements of Scripture and certain facts of History. (2) Indications of the Unity of the Bible.-A reply to objections founded on certain peculiarities of form and structure exhibited in the Bible. Of certain peculiarities of style in the Scriptural writers. On the exceptional position of the Bible in the world. On certain analogies between the Bible and "the constitution and course of nature."

The following critical notices by leading foreign journals indicate very decidedly that the work must enhance and strengthen the brilliant reputation of its distinguished author:

[ocr errors]

We gratefully accept this volume, satisfied that its popular character will command a wide circle of readers, while the freshness and originality of the treatment of an oft-debated theme, its absolute freedom from all controversial bitterness and dogmatic theorising, will commend it to the respectful attention of men of the most divergent views."-British Quarterly Review.

"The pen of Henry Rogers has lost none of its old cunning. It is as subtle, as graphic, as logical and as ornate, as when it wrote The Eclipse of Faith.' If the argument of these lectures is not very profound, it is carried to its logical issues with a resistless force, and clothed in all the charms of eloquent expression. Few books of the season are likely to be more, or more deservedly, popular; the hard work expended on it by the author making it unusually easy and pleasant reading."--Nonconformist.

"This is a volume of much originality, vigour, research, and logical accuracy. The author is not only a master of his wide and difficult subject, but he is aware of its difficulty, and knows how to express his arguments in the best and fairest light. Mr. Rogers has much to say of the last and deepest importance; and his present work will take a good place among the best books of its class."-Standard.

"The subjects discussed are suggested by certain principles and tendencies of human nature apparently at variance with the Bible, by coincidences between Scripture and common history, and by the unity of the Bible; by peculiarities of its structure and style; by its influence; and by certain analogies between it and the course of nature. This summary gives a very faint idea of the wealth of thought, of the curious felicity of style, of the shrewd insight into human nature, which will be found in the book. The subject is one for which the writer's turn of mind and previous studies eminently fit him, and the result is a succession of chapters striking alike for freshness and truth."-Freeman.

"These lectures form one of the most valuable additions of modern times to the apologetics of Christianity."-English Independent.

GILRAY'S CARICATURES.

THE collected caricatures of James Gilray have proved so popular in this country that a new importation of them has been ordered by Scribner, Welford & Armstrong. We find in John Paget's interesting volume of "Paradoxes and Puzzles" a paper on Cruikshank, in which he refers to Gilray at some length. He calls him the father of English Political caricature. With him a new era commenced, "during | which he has presented us, in an uninterrupted series, with a chronicle of political events, a moving panorama of social manners, and a gallery of portraits of the principalactors, so far

as England is concerned, in the great events of the world. The political series of his caricatures commences in the year 1782, shortly before the coalition between Fox and Lord North, and continues until 1810."

LANGE ON REVELATION.

Pro

LANGE on Revelation completes the New Testament division of this great work. bably no volume of the series is more interesting than this, which is prefaced with a most lyptic literature and the revelations of John as valuable and comprehensive treatise on Apocathe crown of all, with detailed explanations of the symbols therein used, occupying a hundred of the close pages. "Dr. Lange," says the critic of the Mail, bases this commentary, his own personal work, on a system of Biblico-prophetic symbolism which shall be founded upon wellascertained rules. He argues against literal interpretations, but believes that the Apocalypse is systematically arranged in cyclical collective pictures of the course of the world." The American edition is extended by Dr. Craven, of Newark.

MARK, AND THE INTERNATIONAL SUNDAYSCHOOL LESSONS.

MESSRS. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co. have promptly met the needs of those Sunday-schools using the uniform International series of lessons, by detaching from the commentaries of Owen, Alexander, and Lange, those portions which refer to the Gospel according to St. Mark, and printing them in separate and inexpensive volumes. These volumes will be published early in June. Owen on Mark is to be sold for $1.00; Alexander on Mark for $1.25, and Lange on Mark for $1.50.

JULES VERNE.

JULES VERNE's extraordinary and entertaining book, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, is now published in a new and handsome edition by SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co., which is withheld from the regular trade, and sold only by subscription. The publishers desire to obtain agents for this exceedingly attractive work in all parts of the country.

SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & CO.

I.

THE BRIC-A-BRAC SERIES. Personal reminiscences of famous poets and novelists, wits and humorists, artists, actors, musicians and the like,

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

Under the general title of "The Bric-a-Brac Series," Messrs. SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & Co. have in preparation a unique series of books, to be published at intervals, in which there shall be collected from the numer. ous biographies, autobiographies and memoirs that have lately appeared, all the reminiscences worth preservation of the men and women who have done so much to make this century one of the most brilliant in the annals of English Literature. Each volume will be complete in itself, and will contain a condensation of one or more of these biographies. A careful index will furnish a ready guide to the contents of the different volumes, in which, under the capable editorship of Mr. R. H. STODDARD, it may safely be asserted there will be brought together a fund of choice and fresh anecdote and gossip, enough not only to justify the general title of the series, but the line of Marlowe which has been selected as its motto, "Infinite riches in a little room." The first volume which will shortly be issued, will contain all that American readers will care to have, from the autobiography of HENRY CHORLEY, for so many years the musical editor of the London Athenæum, from the recollections of J. R. PLANCHE, the veteran dramatist, and from the life of CHARLES MAYNE YOUNG, the tragedian, and from the diary of his son, Rev. JULIAN CHARLES YOUNG.
