RIG VEDA, OU LIVRE DES HYMNES, TRADUIT
DU SANSCRIT, PAR LANGLOIS, ROY, 8vo.
This is a translation of the Veda of the
hymns of praise, the most ancient of the
sacred writings of India. and probably the
oldest book in the world-in fact, it is de-
clared by Indian tradition, coeval with the
creation of Brahma. To the curious student
of the universe, this remarkable book supplies
a boundless region for the exercise of specu-
lation, and is alike interesting and indispen-
sable to the diligent i quirer into primeval
history and archaic society. It throws a blaze
of light upon the obscurity of man's first spe-
culating upon religion and philosophy, and
makes us acquainted with his first child-like
aspirations, his hopes, his fears, and incen-
tives to Idolatory. To the Philologist its im-
portance lies in another equaily interesting
field of inquiry, where an abundant harvest
awaits the sickle of the diligent laborer.

GUYOT'S PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY,

ADOPTED FOR

All the Nine High Schools of Boston. THE BOOK APPROVED BY ALL THE HEAD MASTERS.

IN SCHOOL COMMITTEE, BOSTON, February 24, 1874.

Voted :-That Guyot's Physical Geography be introduced into all the High Schools of this City as a text-book.

Attest:

BARNARD CAPEN, Secretary.

ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL, BOSTON, February 23, 1874. The copy of Guyot's Physical Geography which you were kind enough to send me last summer I have carefully examined. It is the best text-book on the subject with which I am acquainted, and in my opinion it fully merits the high commendations which it has received from so many sources. C. M. CUMSTON, Head Master. ROXBURY HIGH SCHOOL, BOSTON, February 23, 1874. SAMUEL M. WESTON, Head Master.

I heartily concur in the above opinion.

Mr. SAMUEL ELIOT, Head Master of the Girl's High School, informs me that he never gives "written certificates" for text-books, but that he earnestly desires the introduction of this work and has so signified to members of his committee. His name is mentioned here in this manner to obviate the inference that its omission might imply that he did not favor this work.-ED.

PUBLIC LATIN SCHOOL, BOSTON, February 23, 1874. I have examined with a good deal of interest the copy of Guyot's Physical Geography which you had the kindness to send me. Considering it the best text-book for school purposes, I would be glad to have it adopted at the Latin School.

FRANCIS GARDNER, Head Master. DORCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL, February 13, 1874. In regard to Guyot's Physical Geography, I have only to say that I regard it as a work of pre-eminent excellence, and one which our High Schools can ill afford to do without. I have long been wishing and waiting for its introduction into the Schools of this City.

ELBRIDGE SMITH, Head Master. WEST ROXBURY HIGH SCHOOL, February 19, 1874. I most heartily concur in the opinion expressed by Mr. SMITH, and like him, have desired its introduction into this school. EDWARD W. HOWE, Head Master. BOSTON NORMAL SCHOOL, February 20, 1874. Educators who have been waiting ten years for Guyot's Physical Geography expected to find in it marks of advancement in that science, and have not been disappointed. It must long be the authority on the subject of which it treats, both for private students and for schools. L. DUNTON, Master. CHARLESTOWN HIGH SCHOOL, February 19, 1874. We are using Guyot's Physical Geography with entire satisfaction. It is the most perfect work of its kind with which I have any acquaintance.

CALEB EMERY, Head Master. HIGH SCHOOL, BRIGHTON DISTRICT, February 17, 1874.

I place a high value on the text-book in Physical Geography written by Mr. Guyor. The subject seems to me thoroughly digested, the arrangement methodical, and the salient points given with distinctness, while the minutia are presented with a simplicity and explicitness of statement rarely seen in text-books.

I regard it as a masterly production, and hope to see it introduced into every High School in the City and State. BENJ. WOMELL, Master.

AN IMPORTANT WORK BY DR. CHRISTLIEBI

MODERN DOUBT & CHRISTIAN BELIEF

CONSIDERED IN

A Course of Apologetic Lectures, addressed to
Earnest Seekers after Truth,

By THEODORE CHRISTLIEB, Ph.D. and D.D.,

Professor of Theology and University Preacher at Bonn.

Translated from the German under the superintendence of the author, and published in this country by special arrangement with him.

[blocks in formation]

This most readable book is written in an excellent style, free from all ordinary rhetorical commonplaces. Its perusal strengthens our conviction that the cause of Christian truth will ultimately prevail over the bitter attacks how made on it from every side. Scientific and critical points are so skilfully handled that no educated layman will find any difficulty in following the argument. The standpoint is throughout evangelical and Protestant, but withal so liberal that the elements of truth in erroneous systems are freely recognized..... We hardly know of another apologetic work worthy to compare with Dr. Christlieb's.'

Jahrbucher fur Deutsche Theologie.

This popular and yet scientific discussion of the present relations between faith and science meets the needs of educated persons in a twofold manner-first, by acquainting them with the results of scientific and critical investigation, and then by furnishing replies to all the most important current objections.'-[Professor PALMER of Tubingen.]

[ocr errors]

Stuttgarter Kirchenbote.

(THE MOST WIDELY CIRCULATED JOURNAL OF THE EVANGELICAL CHURCH IN GERMANY.)

May this important work, which treats the weighty subjects of inquiry in a masterly and lucid manner, with its charming style, and often impressive eloquence, find many readers in every educated circle.'

British Quarterly Review (October 1872).

"We ought long ago to have directed the attention of our readers to Dr. Christlieb's able apologetic lectures distinguished as they are by thoroughness, clearness and force..... To our mind Dr. Christlieb's work is far more valuable than the two apologetic treatises of Luthardt, a translation of which was published not long ago... We should be glad if some one would publish a good translation.'

Professor Toren of Upsala (Sweden) writes to the Author, April 1870.

I set a high value on this important work, and am commissioned to send you a greeting from the Archbishop, who often speaks of the pleasure which its perusal has given him..... Your book must be read in our country also.'

Copies sent, post-paid, to any address, on receipt of the price, by the Publishers.
